About this resource
In this rhyming activity, students name the pictures or read their labels, then sort ten basketball-shaped cards onto two hoop mats according to whether the words rhyme with ball.
Print the three activity pages and cut out the cards. Lamination is optional. The mats can be used in a literacy centre or mounted inside a file folder; magnets or hook-and-loop fasteners are optional supplies. The five-page PDF also includes thank-you and credit pages.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Identify words that rhyme with a given target word based on ending sound.
Sort words into rhyming and non-rhyming categories.
Teaching tips
Have students say each word aloud before sorting, since rhyme judgment relies on sound rather than spelling.
Use the two clearly non-rhyming words that share a letter with "ball" (bell, bed) to check whether students are sorting by sound or mistakenly by visual similarity.
Reuse the two header cards with a different word bank to extend the same sorting format to other target words.
Skills covered
Phonological awareness — students judge whether a word rhymes with "ball" based on its ending sound.
Category sorting — students place word cards under the correct "rhymes" or "does not rhyme" header.
