About this resource
Stress Management PowerPoint SEL Lesson is a wonderful resource for students to be engaged in learning and practising to manage stress.
In this 12 slide PowerPoint, students will discuss stress triggers and stress management strategies. Slide 2 includes a video to preview before teaching; prepare books and index cards as well.
There are also partner turn and talk times and a very engaging whole class activity.
The lesson can take between 30-45 minutes. It is fully engaging and includes a brainstorming activity for students to come up with strategies they can use when they are feeling stressed.
Please read the slide notes for information on the lesson flow and the important aspects of the class activity.
The lesson should end with the whole class discussion to reflect on how to manage stress.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Students will define stress and identify personal stress triggers through partner discussion.
Students will categorise stress triggers as within their control versus outside their control.
Students will experience a physical metaphor for carrying and releasing stress through the 'book weight' class activity.
Students will identify and record three personal stress-management strategies on an index card to keep for future reference.
Teaching tips
Have students form a circle with a book from their desk for the 'book weight' activity, with one student standing in the centre to represent someone carrying accumulated stress.
After the activity, use the discussion prompts provided (how the weight built up, what it felt like when it lifted) to connect the physical metaphor back to real stress management.
Distribute index cards at the end so students can write down and keep three personal stress-reduction strategies, as directed in the final slide.
Skills covered
Stress-trigger identification — students discuss personal stress triggers with a partner and share them with the class.
Locus-of-control reasoning — students sort triggers into 'within my control' versus 'out of my control' categories.
Coping-strategy generation — students brainstorm and record personal strategies for managing stress.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
What does the 'book weight' activity physically represent, and how does the class release it?
Each student passes a book to a classmate standing in the centre while sharing one stress trigger, symbolically adding weight; then, in reverse order, the group collects their books back one at a time, with each student naming a stress-reduction strategy as their book — and the represented stress — is lifted.
