About this resource

The movable onsets let students change the beginning while keeping -at fixed. After building and reading words, they copy their results onto the second page and try to generate additional examples. This links oral blending with written recording rather than leaving the task at card matching.

Curriculum reference — Ontario: Blending onsets with a rime directly supports early regular-word decoding. Selected skills only; reference stage is not an overall reading age, complete curriculum coverage, or an automatic recommendation for every learner.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Combine an onset with the -at rime to form a word
  • Record words made from movable phonics parts
  • Generate another word that shares the same rime

Teaching tips

  • Model sliding one onset beside -at and blending the resulting word from left to right.
  • Keep the checking page aside until children have built, read, and recorded their own word set.

Skills covered

  • Onset-rime blending — movable parts are joined into a spoken word.
  • Word-family generalization — the recurring -at ending supports new examples.
  • Encoding — constructed words are transferred to writing lines.
