About this resource
Introduction
If you’re teaching direct and indirect speech and your students are having a hard time changing sentences correctly, this resource was made to give them extra practice in a simple and clear way. I created these exercises after noticing that many students understand the basic idea of reported speech but still struggle when changing pronouns, verbs, and commands correctly. So the goal here is just to give them enough repetition to feel more confident.
Objective:
Students will practice and reinforce their understanding of direct and indirect speech by working through a variety of straightforward grammar activities.

Teaching tips
Work through the sections in order, since sections 1-3 build the transformation skill in both directions (direct-to-indirect and indirect-to-direct) before section 4 tests recognition and section 5 isolates just the connecting word.
Use section 4's two-option format as a quick formative check before assigning the longer sections 1-3, since it isolates whether students can recognize a correctly formed sentence.
Assign section 5 as a fast warm-up or review, since it focuses only on the reporting word rather than a full sentence rewrite.

Direct-to-indirect speech conversion — students rewrite 10 direct-speech sentences (e.g. 'Sarah said, "I am happy"') into reported form.
Command-to-reported-speech conversion — students rewrite 10 imperative direct-speech commands (e.g. 'Wash your hands') into told...to reported form.
