About this resource

Independent and dependent clauses, coordinating conjunctions, semicolon rules, and the four sentence types (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex) are tested across a 20-question quiz mixing multiple-choice and true/false formats. Early questions ask students to classify an underlined clause from a given sentence as independent or dependent, middle questions test semicolon and coordinating-conjunction rules as true/false statements, and later questions present a full sentence and ask students to identify its structural type. A complete answer key with the correct letter for all 20 questions appears at the end, and 'Copyright: Educate and Create' is printed on several pages.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish independent clauses from dependent clauses within a sentence.

  • Apply rules governing semicolons and coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences.

  • Classify a full sentence as simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex.

Teaching tips

  • Review the definitions of independent/dependent clauses and the four sentence types before administering the quiz as an assessment.

  • Use the true/false semicolon questions as a quick pre-quiz diagnostic to catch common misconceptions before the harder classification items.

  • Go over missed questions individually, since compound-complex sentence identification is often the most error-prone item type.

Skills covered

  • Clause classification — students identify whether an underlined portion of a sentence is an independent or dependent clause.

  • Sentence-type classification — students categorize full sentences as simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex.

  • Semicolon and conjunction rule application — students evaluate true/false statements about coordinating conjunctions and semicolon use.
