Eight bridge types — beam, arch, suspension, truss, tied-arch, cantilever, cable-stayed, and bascule — are introduced through labeled diagrams paired with a short informational passage that names a real example bridge for each type, such as the Golden Gate Bridge as a suspension bridge and the DuSable Bridge in Chicago as a bascule bridge (also called a drawbridge). The passage opens by explaining that most modern bridges are made of concrete or steel and distinguishes vehicle bridges from pedestrian bridges and water-carrying aqueducts. Eight comprehension questions follow, ranging from main-idea and author's-purpose questions to a fact-versus-opinion question and an open-ended prompt asking students to describe their favourite bridge type, with a complete answer sheet provided.
