Learn Initial Sounds I: Lesson 9 teaches the letter Ii and its related phonic sound through a 33-slide PowerPoint lesson, and 5 follow-up activity worksheets. All you need to teach the phonic letter I! Whether in school or at home, this series of phonic presentations can help you effectively teach initial/beginning sounds to all pupils, including those with special needs/dyslexia. This lesson is part of a synthetic, systematic phonics programme for all abilities including those suspected of being dyslexic. This lesson is in the first stage of the Reading Made Simple programme where we teach the initial, or beginning, sounds. The ability to hear the initial/beginning sound is stressed throughout, while we learn to associate each letter with its sound. Each lesson can stand alone but the activities will presume knowledge of the previous letters in the alphabet as Reading Made Simple teaches the initial sounds in alphabetical order. Special features of the Learn Initial Sounds I: Lesson 9 The PowerPoint is silent so that you can interact with your child in the best way for them: full instructions are provided at the bottom of each slide - be sure to show 'Notes'. Science of Reading Aligned Truly phonetic; no 'i' for 'ice-cream'. We focus heavily on phonemic awareness which is so necessary for a head start in phonics The child is given plenty of opportunities to learn the necessary skills - perfection is not expected in lesson 1. Still, the teacher will look for the development of the necessary skills as the child works through the alphabet. What is included in the Learn Initial Sounds I: Lesson 9? A 33-slide PowerPoint which teaches phonemic awareness, letter/sound correspondence and letter formation along with practice games 5 follow-up worksheets How can the Learn Initial Sounds I: Lesson 9 be used? It can be used in multiple ways: As the child learns each sound, you can use the PowerPoint lesson to reinforce your own lesson It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after being taught the letter Ii in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. Use in class Use at home by parents or for home education Suggested Method: Introduce each letter in turn to your pupil. Have a flashcard of the letter ready. Say each letter's sound to the child and ask him/her to repeat it thrice. Explain that some words begin with this sound. Give an example. Use the lesson as teacher training for yourself, to see how to teach your child, or use it with the child. Choose suitable activities (matching the ability of your child) from the pak of worksheets. Notes are suggestions only - use language appropriate to your pupil and be sure to interact naturally. However, do make sure that you focus on the hearing of the sounds at the beginning of words as this is much overlooked in the quest to help children learn the initial sounds as quickly as possible. Playing the Game After the titles and information about the game, the first game will begin. Students will be shown a close-up photo of an object and have to guess what it is. Press the = button for the answer and the original photo with word will appear. Press the arrow button to move onto the next question. 6 questions in total. Second game is a memory game. Starting with three pictures and ending up with six, students have ten seconds to observe the pictures on the screen, then need to say the words they remember. The picture page will automatically move on after ten seconds but if you wish to move on yourself quicker then there is an arrow button. In the answer screen, answers will flash if correct, dim if incorrect. Finally game is more like a question and answer, but in two parts. In the part, there will be a clue and 3-6 words to choose from. Press the correct answer. In the second section you will get the reverse, one word and then two to three clues to choose from. Get students engaged with learning about the letter I with this mini foldable alphabet book. The large images makes these books easy for students to color, and the foldable nature of these books product a no prep activity that can easily be assigned to students. What is Included: This resource includes two foldable books for the letter I. Each book includes a cover page and 3 picture pages all with pictures that begin with I. Each page also includes a sentence that reads like "A is for Apple," making it easy to read for beginning readers. There is one book for the short vowel sound and one book for the long vowel sound. How to Make: Students will color each page of the foldable book. They will then fold the page to make an alphabet book. The student will then read the book to themselves or to another person. When to Use: Independent Practice - Students can be given these mini books to color and work on independently. Homework - This book can be sent home with students so that they can work on beginning reading and letter sounds with their parents. Literacy or Writing Center - Place the page in the center and let students create their own book. Library - The teacher may choose to create this book and add it to the classroom library for students to read during center time. These alphabet books are a no prep option for teachers to give to students to complete. Each book just needs to be printed out and given to students to complete. They will only need their desired crayons, markers, or colored pencils. No scissors or glue required! Students will have a lot of fun creating and reading these books. They will gain confidence in their reading skills by reading the easy sentences to themselves or to their peers. Students will also gain practice recognizing beginning sounds!

Short and Long I: What's Outside the Train Window Sample Game Note: This download is in PowerPoint show mode to protect the rights of the image creator(s), and is thus UNEDITABLE. Playing the Game After the first page, there is a quick intro to the game. After this the first train sequence will begin. There will be some winter scene outside along with seven letter I words. This is automated and will move onto the question page automatically. On the question page you will have four options, choose the select button for the right answer. If you wish to watch the animation again, you can click the back button. After the correct answer has flashed, press next and the next train animation will start. Questions vary in difficulty so you may need to play the animation more than once. In the first game, one picture will slowly appear (20 seconds long). Press the cookie in the bottom-left to begin, press again to reveal the answer. Press the arrow in the bottom-right to change to the next page. There are 9 questions in total Second game is similar but there will be two pictures appearing at the same time. Press the donut in the bottom-left to begin. The pictures will appear on the clock, press the pink clock button next to the picture that corresponds to the word at the top. Wrong answer will buzz, correct answer will make a noise and both pictures will be fully revealed. Press arrow in the bottom-right to change page. 4 questions in total. Last game will review the words from the previous game. Word is at the top, four pictures below, choose the correct picture for the word. Incorrect answers will dim out, correct answer will flash. Again, arrow in the bottom-right for the next question. 8 questions in total.
