Health 1st Grade Unit 2: Growth and Development

For 1st Grade Health there are seven standards that need to be taught. Unit 1 Personal Health Unit 2 Growth and Development Unit 3 Nutrition and Physical Activity Unit 4 Substance Use and Abuse Unit 5 Injury/ Violence Prevention Control and Safety Unit 6 Prevention/Control of Disease Unit 7 Environmental Consumer Health These units can be taught out of order. They are only numbered for your convenience. At the end of each unit, there is an assessment to test students’ understanding. Through using this Health 1st Grade Unit 2: Growth and Development students will explore and learn to identify physical characteristics and emotional characteristics. Included in this Health 1st Grade Unit 2: Growth and Development: * Students match the physical characteristics and facial expressions with the correct emotion. * Students will draw an emotion based on a given event. * They will also work as a class as they identify all the different characteristics their peers have compared to themselves. At the end of the unit, there is an assessment to check for understanding. Included in this unit is an assessment with answer key. A total of 9 pages for Health 1st Grade Unit 2: Growth and Development. There are seven units that cover all the health requirements for first grade. Types of Paragraphs: Make a Magazine Project: Narrative, Descriptive, Persuasive, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, How-To Paragraphs. This fun and engaging mini-unit helps teach paragraph writing while keeping students interested because they are creating their very own magazine! How to Use: Print a hamburger paragraph handout for each student. Review the parts of an effective paragraph: topic sentence, juicy details, and concluding sentence. Then teach your students about the six types of paragraphs they are going to learn how to write: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and how-to. Each kind of paragraph will be a different part of the magazine. A persuasive paragraph becomes a letter to the editor. A narrative paragraph will be a personal story. A descriptive paragraph will be a travel article. A compare and contrast paragraph will be a product review. A cause and effect paragraph will be a current events article, and a how-to paragraph will be a home maintenance piece. Use one period of class time to draft each paragraph. Students get a handout with some sample ideas and then come up with their own. They draft a 5-sentence paragraph that will become their "article." After each draft, show students the editing handout, and encourage them to edit their own work or trade with a friend. You can also have students hand in their drafts each day for you to edit as well. Once students have their six edited drafts, they can either type them OR write good copies on the included templates. Put them all together, make a title page, and each student now has their own magazine! Extensions: Early finishers can make a crossword puzzle using an online website, or create their own advertisement for their magazine! Regents Global 9 CRQ "Trade Routes, Ancient" + Video Lessons This product is a constructed-response question (“CRQ”) in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography. The CRQ calls upon the student to examine historical sources (I use exclusively primary sources) by providing historical or geographic context, identifying the point of view, intended audience, or purpose of a document and then using the two documents in either compare-contrast, cause-effect analysis, or turning point identification. I advocate a strategy of assigning one CRQ in each unit of study in grades nine and ten without access to notes. I used this as one of the tests at the end of a unit of study. I would tell students about what kinds of documents would appear and what historical context they should be able to recall in advance. It is a challenging task for them. The first challenge for novices is to understand what it means to provide context. Faced with the question “What is the historical context of this document?”, beginners will retell what the document says. The reason for this mistake is that, since they were little kids, teachers have asked them to relate what a text means to prove they understood it. Topics are varied and are accompanied by colorful graphics. Topics are meant to educate, yet entertain the modern student. These passages are perfect for the modern classroom. Whereas textbooks can become outdated in no time, any changes to technology or the world will result in updates to this product. Mixed Questions The mixed questions section of each lesson includes a variation of five comprehension, vocabulary and math questions. In addition, key reading strategies are frequently covered including cause & effect, summarizing, compare & contrast and making conclusions. Two or three of the questions will be MCQs and other questions will require a written response of some kind. Full answers and example responses appear at the end of the lesson. Spelling & Vocab Each reading passage contains a variety of words and phrases designed for Grade 4-5 students. Spelling and vocab activities provide the opportunity to build fluency with these words. As it can become quite mundane doing the same activities over and over, each lesson in a set will contain a different spelling and vocab activity . Activities include: spelling games, sentence match-ups, mixed-up text and decoding words from the lesson. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Full Answer Keys Full answer keys and sample responses are provided so no matter how busy you are, you know you're covered! Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student. Just for Fun Each lesson will have a bonus extension exercise. This is something fun to extend the lesson with. You can find these at the end of each lesson, titled Just for Fun.
