Digraphs SH: Read and Colour

This fun, Read and Color worksheet for SH words is an excellent means of encouraging children to become familiar with a new digraph. The child will be scanning the picture for each word as it is coloured and colouring according to the code given. The child will be thrilled by the finished picture! What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the SH digraph. What do the worksheets involve? An adult should instruct pupils as to how to colour-code the words, by the code given. An adult will need to help with this as the children are not expected to be able to read the colour names. The child should then read the words to an adult (you will want to ensure they get it correct the first time and not make mistakes). The child colours the picture, reading the words and checking against the code to see which colour to each shape. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed and the words colour-coded, although, with children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use As each new blend is introduced the teacher has several aims: The child should be thoroughly familiar with the new digraph - to recognise it wherever it is seen; To be able to track the new digraph in words; To be able to decode words containing the new digraph easily. This fun read and colour activity provides help for all three! Pupils will need as much practice as they can to achieve the three things listed above and for some children, this can be tedious; the teacher must think of creative ways to give as much repetition as needed and to keep the child engaged. This fun Read and Colour sheet is ideal as a new way to engage the child: the child will be reading and re-reading and in doing so may even become familiar with the words, which will aid reading fluency. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature , they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Here is a fun, print 'n play phonic game for the split digraph a-e! Help your pupils to grasp the tricky split digraph concept as they play! Who is the a-e game suitable for? All learners of phonics, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /a-e/ sound will start to make every /a/ into a long /a-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this game has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound a-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /a/ and some have a long /a-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. How to play: This is a game for two ore three players, one of which should be an adult. The game can be played with either pictures or sounds. Each player takes a game board (either pictures or sounds) which will indicate whether the player should listen for words with a short /a/ sound or a long /a-e/ sound. The adult reads a word on the word card, and the pupils must listen for 'e' or no 'e'? If the pupil has the sound/ picture on his/her board, she/he covers up a space. the winner fills hi/her board first. Letter P Worksheets + PowerPoint Lesson Lesson 16 teaches the letter Pp and its related phonic sound through a 34-slide PowerPoint lesson, and 5 follow-up activity worksheets. All you need to teach the phonic letter P! Whether in school or at home, this series of phonic presentations can help you effectively teach initial/beginning sounds to all pupils, including those with special needs/dyslexia. This lesson is part of a synthetic, systematic phonics programme for all abilities, including those suspected of being dyslexic. This lesson is in the first stage of the Reading Made Simple programme, where we teach the initial, or beginning, sounds. The ability to hear the initial/beginning sound is stressed throughout, while we learn to associate each letter with its sound. Each lesson can stand alone, but the activities will presume knowledge of the previous letters in the alphabet as Reading Made Simple teaches the initial sounds in alphabetical order. Special features of the Letter P Worksheets and PowerPoint presentation: The PowerPoint is silent so that you can interact with your child in the best way for them: full instructions are provided at the bottom of each slide - be sure to show 'Notes'. Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: CVC Words: Book 1

This is the first in a series of books written for struggling readers. This is a series of decodable phonic books written for struggling readers. Struggling readers often have gaps in their phonic knowledge or have started to guess. These books help to retrain the child. They start back at the beginning with CVC words to ensure the child can read fluently at this level and to build shattered confidence. Sometimes children think they can read the easy books, but find that they have learnt to guess words which interrupts fluency and excludes them from comprehending what has been read. They build up, from CVC words, through consonant blends words with a short vowel sound, to ck, oo words. More are coming! They are useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even of 11+ who are struggling to read fluently. Pupils should be able to blend fluently and have some phonic knowledge, though it may not be secure. Who is this book for? Older pupils who can read, but who have a reading age well below their chronological age. Such children may struggle to read simple text with accuracy/fluency and thereby lack comprehension. It is not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my CVC decodable readers for books for such pupils. It is convenient enough for parents to use with their children, as well as for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps This book begins at the beginning, with CVC words with a short vowel sound. In my remedial work with older struggling readers, I often find that it is here that difficulties arise, as the child may not have properly learnt to blend, and have started to guess. Therefore, this book gives confidence in reading passages that are totally decodable. I find that often these children need help to distinguish between similar words, either due to not looking at the initial or final sound and by retraining the child to read accurately using these simple texts - that do not look babyish - and then rebuilding from the bottom up, much progress can be made. Please find the next book in the series, Consonant Blends Words here. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain on these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills. It is crucial that they build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. This book, used as described will help to build that foundation. I am finding more and more such pupils desperate for help. You can help too! It is not hard but just needs a little understanding of the problem. PowerPoint While using this book, use the exercise on the included PowerPoint to strengthen the child's phonic blending skills and to re-train the child not to guess but look at all sounds in a word. Do have the child recite the vowel sounds at every lesson as these are often weak. Also do much practice of reading parts of words with a vowel and a consent, e.g.; ma/me/mi/ mo/ mu or at/et/it/ot/ut etc... There is a PowerPoint included with this book for this purpose, but you can easily make your own resources.
