Binary Mystery Pictures This is an extension activity used after the students have had several lessons on place value for base 2. They should have also had practice converting base 10 numbers using 0 and 1 to write numbers in base 2 (binary). The picture activity takes conversion one step further, having the student filling in each box as a 0 or 1, with a 1 represented by a shaded box. Converting the given numbers from base 10 to base 2 will reveal a pixelated image, as a computer would draw it on the screen. The grid is divided into 2 main sections (A and B), each with 8 smaller columns across. Notice the two columns of numbers along the grid to the left. The column of numbers on the left correspond to section A and the numbers on the right correspond to section B. Directions: 1. For each row, convert each base 10 number to base 2. Show your answer by shading in the appropriate boxes in the corresponding column. A shaded box represents that place value as a “1.” Example: In the grid below, the first row lists 0 and 0, so therefore, no boxes are shaded. In the second row in section A, 0 is listed so again no boxes in that section's row are shaded. In the second row, section B, 15 is shown. To represent 15 as an 8-digit binary number, you would shade the first four boxes from the right to represent “00001111” in the place values filled. 2. Continue converting numbers for each row until the picture is revealed.

Beginning Sound and Ending Sound Matching Game

Preschool and kindergarten students will have fun practicing phonological awareness skills by identifying the beginning sounds and ending sounds in words with these phonics matching cards. What is Included: In this phonics card set, there are 24 total cards, available in both color and black and white. Each set of cards makes 12 pairs of words with the same beginning sounds and ending sounds. Ways to Use: Concentration or Memory Game : Students will start the game by having all of the cards face down. Each student will take turns turning over 2 cards. If both the beginning sound and ending sound of both cards match, then the student keeps the pair. If they do not, then the student puts them back face down. The student with the most correct pairs wins. Find a Partner: The teacher starts by giving each student one of the picture cards. The students then look around at the cards the other students have to see if it matches their beginning sound and their ending sound. Once they find their match, then they found their partner. Students can simply work together to match the cards with the same beginning sound and ending sound. Pairs Included: bag - bug, bat - boat, crab - cab, dog - dig, fan - fin, hat - hut, log - leg, mop - map, night - net, rug - rag, sock - snake, vine - van Skills Assessed: This activity assesses students' abilities at identifying and matching beginning and ending sounds in single syllable words. This activity is a low prep activity for teachers to prepare for students. The cards just need to be printed out and cut apart. They can be laminated for durability if the teacher desires. The cards can be stores in a task box or pencil box for easy set up, clean up and storage options.

Beware that these are made with color, so in order to be eco-friendly you might want to use black and white ink. Once the students have taken these lists home, they can do the vocabulary test in their next class. They can practice with the words by utilizing the included flash cards. These just need to be printed, laminated, and cut. Beware of sharp edges though. You can use the curved edges version to avoid annoying pinches. Additionally, it can provide a sense of routine and structure within the classroom environment. Displaying the current season and weather in a classroom can help children learn about the natural world and develop their observational skills. It is part of a series of highly structured decodable reading books with controlled vocab; all vocab is decodable using phonic knowledge the child already has (if read in sequence) and true irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. These books can help children develop reading fluency, providing sequential decodable reading passages that practice previously taught phonic sounds while introducing new ones. Together they form a highly structured phonic reading scheme and should be read in order. The previous books can all be found in the Lilibette's Resources store. I created these phonic readers as I saw the huge need for highly structured, fun-to-read, early-reading books. They are very popular. I am an Early Years Specialist Teacher (B. Ed) who is currently tutoring children with profound special needs in reading and writing following over 30 years of teaching phonics. Main features: •The Level 1 readers gently introduce sight words, but only those that cannot be learned in a phonetic family, or will be needed before the family has been studied. •All the other words can be sounded out using the necessary phonic knowledge. Pictures do not encourage guessing •Each book tries to tell a simple story. •Each book has been tested on children with severe special needs and those with none – all have loved them as they can read them! •The books should be read in order Who can use these reading books? All beginner readers of any age and ability Struggling readers of all ages and abilities, including special needs pupils with severe dyslexia/other processing difficulties Teachers, parents, classroom assistants, private tutors - anyone who needs them! Are these phonic reading books and workbooks aligned with the UK Gov requirements or LETRS? Yes - totally. Though not part of an approved programme they are based on synthetic, very systematic phonics. Each book comes with a matching PowerPoint making it suitable for use in a range of settings. The Jack Stories, of which this book is one, introduces one phonic sound at a time, and subsequent books build on the vocabulary of the books before, constantly revising and reviewing learned sounds. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student.
