This game will help your children to learn to hear the sounds ‘ar’ and ‘or’ in words and to read words containing these sounds. This game is black and white for eco-printing at home, or to send home. A colour version can be found in the Lilibette's Resources store. Who is it for: Children who are learning the digraphs ar and or. Those children working in Phase 3 of Letters and Sounds Those children working in Speed Set 2 of RWI. Who can use the ar/or game? Teachers, parents, private tutors - anyone who needs it! How to make the game Print out pages 4 to 9, on card. Cut out the picture cards (pages 6 - 8). Cut up the ar/or cards (page 9). Write ‘ar’ on the back of one baseboard (pages 4/5) and ‘or’ on the back of the other. Write ‘ar’ or ‘or’ as appropriate on the backs of the picture cards. Find a bag or small box to put the small letter ar/or cards in. How to play the game This is a game for 2 players. It is best if an adult plays with each child individually first and then when each child in a pair is confident, they can play in together. The game can be played with the picture and word cards alone, without the ar/or cards - as a simple matching game. This is how it has been designed to be played: Take a baseboard each. This will decide who is collecting ‘ar’ pictures and ‘or’ pictures. Choose 6 ar and 6 or cards (you can choose different pictures each time you play). Scatter the picture cards picture side up. Take it in turns to take an ‘ar’/’or’ letter card from the bag/box. If the player with the ‘ar’ baseboards picks an ‘ar’ card, s/he may choose a picture with the ar sound in. Likewise with ‘or’. Players may only turn the picture card over to check that they are correct. If not, the picture card is replaced. The winner is the first to fill his/her card. Do: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your go and invite your pupil’s help, so they get even more practice. Look at the cards that are left. What sound do they have in them? These cat themed counting to 10 posters make a great pet classroom display. Students will have the bright and colorful number poster display to practice counting and recognizing the numbers from one to 10. What is Included: This packet includes one cat poster for each number from 1 through ten. Each poster features the number in standard form, in word form, and includes the correct number of cats so students can see a visual representation of that number. Each number poster will print on a full sized 8.5 X 11 page and can be printed smaller (2 or 4 to a page) if the teacher desires a smaller poster or if they have limited space for a wall display. Ways to Use: The themed number wall display: Great to put up in a math center or in the circle time area, these number posters make a great classroom wall decoration for displaying the numbers 1 through 10. Phonics Chart: Alphabet chart A Bright, colourful, phonetically correct alphabet chart ! A colourful A4-size alphabet picture chart to help children learn to recognise the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. Each letter has a picture of an object that begins with that sound. 2 font styles are included. When children are first starting to learn letter shapes and sounds, it is helpful to have a handy reference chart that the children can use to aid recall or letter shapes and a picture cue to the sound each letter stands for. There are many ways to use these charts: Wall reference Desk reference - give one to each child; special needs children especially find them helpful. This resource contains everything you need to practice the long e sound. First of all, there is a vocabulary list with 20 long e sound words. You can then test these words with the included vocabulary test. You can also play a variety of vocab games with the included flash cards. Just print them, laminate them, and cut them out. You can decide to use the ones with sharp corners or rounded corners. Games to play could be memory for example. There is also a digital file that can be used to introduce these words. Just launch the PDF file on a computer and flick through the pages. Usually students find this more engaging then the printed out cards. If you really want to have some fun, play the BINGO game. A bunch of different BINGO cards are included in this resource. You can also write wome words down on the blank card yourself.

This Guided Reading Book - Science of Seasons (Level Q) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Key seasonal markers: The vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox, and winter solstice are described with what happens to daylight and seasons. Hemispheres and opposite seasons: The book states seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres because of Earth’s tilt. Reading Made Simple — Free EA (e as in head) Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Reading Made Simple for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. Tested by real children: One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' When I hear these reviews, I know that I have succeeded in my aim to write a phonics curriculum that can help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. These little workbooks are just one small part of what there is to offer. Please do check out the website for more information. Each workbook offers a gentle mix of activities built around the target sound. Children will read short passages that practise the new sound alongside words from sounds already taught, track and identify the sound within words to support both reading and spelling, practise spelling and sentence writing, and work through simple editing exercises where they spot and correct mistakes. These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. There is no obligation and no right or wrong way to use them. To print: print double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Fold in half to create your A5 booklet. The answer page at the back is optional. One sheet of paper. One sound. Everything a child needs to practise, consolidate and grow in confidence.

Activities include: spelling games, sentence match-ups, mixed-up text and decoding words from the lesson. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student.
