5 Initial Sounds Worksheets: h A pack of 5 worksheets to help children learn to recognise the letter 'h' by both its shape and its sound, while also building correct letter formation from the very start. Each worksheet approaches the sound from a slightly different angle, so the child gets plenty of repetition without it ever feeling repetitive. Worksheet 1 asks the child to read a row of letters, tracing each one and saying the sound aloud, before naming a set of pictures and writing the initial sound underneath each - bringing sound, shape and word together in one simple task. Worksheet 2 has the child trace a large, chunky version of the letter, then hunt through a group of jumbled letters to find every occurrence of the target letter, tracing and saying the sound each time they spot one - a lovely way to sharpen visual discrimination alongside letter recognition. Worksheets 3 to 5 build on this foundation with a variety of engaging activities - among them, listening for the target sound among a set of pictures and colouring only those that begin with it, matching the letter to pictures that share its sound, and a hands-on cut-and-stick activity where the child finds, names and sticks down the pictures that begin with the sound, saying it aloud as they go. The Phonics Advantage Progressive Emergent Reader Books slowly progress in the number of words on the page, number of words in a sentence, and the number of sentences on a page. The emergent readers reinforce sight-word vocabulary and word families. Great care was taken to use small decodable words, and to review words from earlier stories. These emergent readers are formatted for easy reading on student’s digital devices. They can also be read on all computer screens, and be presented on white boards for whole-class reading experiences. The emergent readers can be downloaded to student’s digital devices, emailed to student’s homes, or posted on a class website that is password protected and open to your classroom only. This download is for the first 15 emergent readers in Level 2. Level 2 is a mixture themed books and short stories written with small decodable words with one to three sentences on each page. The product is a zip file containing three PDF files, each having five emergent readers. For subject diversity, each PDF of five emergent readers contains a book on animals (rabbits, pet birds, goldfish), a trip (the row, the parade, school fair), and something to do (cotton-ball fun, pipe cleaners, potatoes). There are twenty books in Level 1, the first part of the early reading series. Level 1 is mostly themed books. Level 2 comes in two parts: Books 1 – 15 and Books 16 – 30. Like Level 1, Level 2 focuses on word families, small decodable words, and common word wall words.

This is a set of 2, short vowel /e/, decodable phonic reading books, with supporting activity packs to help struggling readers develop reading fluency. Each lesson focuses on just ten decodable words with each medial vowel sound including a few words with consonant blends. What is included: This is a pack of 2 lessons (2 books, 2 games, 2 packs of worksheets) - 2 for each vowel sound: a total time of 2 weeks of phonics instruction. Who is this set of short vowel decodable readers for? This pack is part of the Reading Made Simple special needs reading and spelling programme. It has been trialled and tested on children with a range of processing difficulties which result in poor recall problems. These children are marked by having difficulty recalling words that have been sounded out when they meet them again and for whom, therefore, reading fluency seems elusive. They have been tried and tested on children with severe dyslexia, children with Cerebral Palsy and those with general learning difficulties. Children using these books are expected to be confident at reading and spelling CVC words with a short vowel and at reading words with consonant blends and a short vowel sound, but may still need support to spell them. This set of decodable reading books has a more controlled vocabulary than our main set of CVC Decodable reading books and our Consonant Blends books . For best effect, these phonic lessons should be taught in order as each lesson builds on the one before. Typical signs that this programme can help: · Difficulty recalling words when seen on flashcards or when reading texts, which results in no or little reading fluency · b/d letter reversal of a chronic nature – i.e. the child has not grown out of it · Difficulty ordering letters in words: E.g. top becomes pot. · Difficulty differentiating between like words: spoon/soon; back/black; sheep/sleep etc… · Difficulty tracking words across a page To help all children succeed, each phonic family is taught in two lessons, each a week in duration. This speed has been tried and tested to be the optimum speed to allow children to absorb new information without mental overload. You may find that some children need longer - but never less. Each phonic family is split into half and only 5/6 words in a family are studied each week. Activities are provided to give the child plenty of exposure to the new sound and the set of words that contain it. These activities are not hard, but simply bring the child face to face with the words, first individually, then in sentences, and finally in longer passages. We also seek to strengthen knowledge of blends and develop phonemic awareness through the activities, much needed by these learners. In all, the way that Reading Made Simple has been designed reduces the burden on the working memory, making it easier for children to learn to read. Children relax as they meet familiar words again and again. They begin to say – sometimes for the first time, ‘I can read’. With this programme, you can help a non-reader today! Introducing just 10 words in each phonics family, the words are repeated from book to book, giving even those with very poor word recall the chance to learn to read fluently without having to decode every word. However, this has led to a proliferation of reading books that throw as many words with a shared phonics sound into a book as possible, not realising that some children with very poor word recall find it hard to recognise words when they see them again without much repetition. To combat this problem, while we recognise that, technically, once a child has been taught a new sound s/he can sound out many words with that new sound, when it comes to reading fluently, a child needs a core set of words in each family that they can recognise, which can act as a launch pad as they gain confidence. These books have been designed accordingly. For each sound family, just 10 words are studied with the help of the workbooks and are then repeated throughout the books, each book building on the vocabulary that has already been learned, repeating it and including it in new phrases as new sounds are learned. As the programme progresses, new sounds from the learned families are incorporated to widen vocabulary, while taking care to maintain fluency. The books are designed to limit guessing (though most children will try and guess, which must be avoided at all costs).
