Phonic Reading Scheme for Older Students: _NG Endings Book 15

This NG Endings decodable reading book is the 15th book in a series that can help children with special needs pupils develop reading fluency. Each book comes with a matching PowerPoint making it suitable for use in a range of settings. The Jack Stories, of which this book is one, introduces one phonic sound at a time, and subsequent books build on the vocabulary of the books before, constantly revising and reviewing learned sounds. Irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. Science of reading aligned. Based on the most up-to-date phonic research. These books should be read sequentially as they tell one long story, each telling a part. This book contains words with the following sounds: CK: OO, EE and SH and CH and ND Endings. The whole series to date can also be purchased as a growing bundle here, with a scope and sequence. This series has been written with the aid of one of my pupils, aged 8. He has drawn some of the pictures. What makes this phonic reading programme for special needs different? · It has its own, easy-to-download and print phonic reading books, making it accessible to many children worldwide. · Each book carefully builds on the vocabulary of those that have gone before, providing much repetition, without relying on predictable text. · Pictures aid the storyline without encouraging reading from the pictures – i.e. guessing. · The vocabulary is based on phonic families, which are introduced in a carefully planned way. · True sight words – those that cannot be sounded out - are kept to the very minimum. Most words are introduced in their phonic family wherever possible. · It is truly multisensory, using the power of the hand. We not only look at the words, but we write them too. This is powerful and has the bonus of turning the child not only into a reader but into a writer as well. Typical signs that this programme can help: Those with dyslexia, or suspected of having dyslexia Difficulty recalling words when seen on flashcards or when reading texts, which results in no or little reading fluency b/d letter reversal of a chronic nature – i.e. the child has not grown out of it Difficulty ordering letters in words: E.g. top becomes pot. Difficulty differentiating between like words: spoon/soon; back/black; sheep/sleep etc… Difficulty tracking words across a page How long is the book? The reading book is 16 pages long. e or ee? Phonic Game

This "e or ee?" Phonic Game is a listening game to help the child hear the "ee" sound in words, as different to the "e" sound, since some children have real difficulty hearing this new sound. This is a simple oral game for 2 players, designed to develop the ability to hear the sounds as separate in words, without the need to worry about text yet. No reading or spelling is required at this stage — it's purely a hearing game. No die is needed; each player simply builds a tower of coloured beads as they correctly identify the "ee" sound in a word. These children may have auditory processing difficulties, of which there are growing numbers. With recognition of their needs and timely intervention, many can survive school. Sadly, without it, they may soon fall behind. If you have a child who cannot easily hear the graphemes in words, find or make a game to help. This is one such game you can use. Background to why I made this game One of my pupils has a speech delay. When I introduced him to "ee", he tried to sound out the words by saying "e" instead. It was as if "ee" was a foreign sound to him. So I devised this game to help him hear the "ee" sound in words he already uses frequently. After playing it a few times, he happily sounded out words to read and spell with the "ee" sound. Who can use the "e or ee?" Phonic Game? Anyone teaching a child who has difficulty learning to read words with /ee/, trying instead to say /e/. It's especially useful for children with speech delay or auditory processing difficulties who need extra support hearing this distinction before they're ready to decode it in print. This ea decodable reading book can help children develop reading fluency. It is part of a series of highly structured decodable reading books with controlled vocab; all vocab is decodable using phonic knowledge the child already has (if read in sequence) and true irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. These books can help children develop reading fluency, providing sequential decodable reading passages that practice previously taught phonic sounds while introducing new ones. Together they form a highly structured phonic reading scheme. They follow on from our previous sets of: CVC Reading Books with matching workbooks Consonant Blends Reading Books with matching workbooks Level 1 Red Books. with matching workbooks These books are best read in sequence. This book contains words with the following sounds: ck, oo, ee, sh, ch, th, ng, ing, ar, or, a-e, i-e and u-e, ai, and ea. I created these phonic readers as I saw the huge need for highly structured, fun-to-read, early-reading books. They are very popular. I am an Early Years Specialist Teacher (B. Ed) who is currently tutoring children with profound special needs in reading and writing following over 30 years of teaching phonics. Main features: •The Level 1 readers gently introduce sight words, but only those that cannot be learned in a phonetic family, or will be needed before the family has been studied. •All the other words can be sounded out using the necessary phonic knowledge. Pictures do not encourage guessing •Each book tries to tell a simple story. •Each book has been tested on children with severe special needs and those with none – all have loved them as they can read them! •The books should be read in order Who can use these reading books? All beginner readers of any age and ability Struggling readers of all ages and abilities, including special needs pupils with severe dyslexia/other processing difficulties Teachers, parents, classroom assistants, private tutors - anyone who needs them! Are these phonic reading books and workbooks aligned with the UK Gov requirements or LETRS? Yes - totally. Though not part of an approved programme they are based on synthetic, very systematic phonics. They are highly structured, repeating vocabulary, introducing sight words slowly and introducing a-e words while practising those listed above that have been learned before. How long are the books? The reading books are either 8 or 12 pages long. Why are these books FREE when other people's books cost so much? Are they of lesser quality? They are free as I regard the ability to read as being a fundamental right of every living person. Why should some miss out on top-quality resources because they cannot pay for them? In terms of content, they are top quality, carefully planned and sequenced with the aim of helping as many children as possible get started on the phonic road to reading. Turn your daily weather into a rainbow! Check out the weather type, match it to the color key, and fill in the weather chart. Kids love coloring in the chart and seeing how the colors change throughout the seasons. Also included are weather type cards with corresponding colors. This helps kids connect the weather type to the color on the chart! I used this with my 3rd graders and my 2 year old son at separate times. My 3rd graders were able to fill in the chart on their own each day, then tuck it away into a science folder. They used the data after a few weeks to chart the weather types and make a project from it. My 2 year old son really loved the weather cards. He liked looking outside each day and matching the sky to the card. I helped him fill in the correct box on the chart. This is a flexible free activity pack that kids of all ages will love!

It can be used in multiple ways: As the child learns each sound, you can use the PowerPoint lesson to reinforce your own lesson It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after being taught the letter Cc in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. Use in class Use at home by parents or for home education Suggested Method: Introduce each letter in turn to your pupil. Have a flashcard of the letter ready. Say the sound each letter represents to the child and ask him/her to repeat it three times. Explain that some words begin with this sound. Give an example. Either use the lesson as teacher training for yourself to see how to teach your child, or use it with the child. Choose suitable activities (matching the ability of your child) from the pak of worksheets. Notes are suggestions only - use language appropriate to your pupil and be sure to interact naturally. However, do make sure that you focus on the hearing of the sounds at the beginning of words as this is much overlooked in the quest to help children learn the initial sounds as quickly as possible.
