Phonics Chart: Alphabet chart A Bright, colourful, phonetically correct alphabet chart ! A colourful A4-size alphabet picture chart to help children learn to recognise the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. Each letter has a picture of an object that begins with that sound. 2 font styles are included. When children are first starting to learn letter shapes and sounds, it is helpful to have a handy reference chart that the children can use to aid recall or letter shapes and a picture cue to the sound each letter stands for. There are many ways to use these charts: Wall reference Desk reference - give one to each child; special needs children especially find them helpful. Wall reference: a wall chart Play quick games: Put a counter on the letter that says /t/, for example, and play until all letters are covered. Cut up the squares and ask the children to lay the letters in alphabetical order. Activities: Write me the sound that ...teddy... begins with: can the child write the letter straight away without looking? Does the child look for the picture of the teddy? Use to assess. Can you tell me which object begins with the sound ...../h/, for example. The child looks for 'h' and says 'house'. Let the children use their charts as they complete worksheets/write/spell. I originally made this chart for a special needs kindergarten child with cerebral palsy; although he knew his letters and the associated phonic sounds, his recall was poor - he could know them one minute and they had gone the next. He loves using his chart and has made rapid progress since I made it. It gave him security.

This Guided Reading Book - Light Before Electricity (Level L) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. How inventions solved problems: lanterns protected flames from wind, gas traveled through pipes to power lamps, and electric lightbulbs were safer because they used no real flame. Past-to-present comparison: lighting changed from “flickering fires” to steady electric light you can turn on with a switch. Reading Made Simple — Free CK Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Sound It Out Phonics for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. 1. Brief introduction: Dinosaurs are always attractive to children, for this reason today I decided to create this fun resource for children to review the letters from A to Z, with a dinosaur theme. It should be noted that this material contains both uppercase and lowercase letters. According to a recent study, children tend to be interested in dinosaurs between the ages of 2 and 6. Furthermore, the study showed that children who tend to focus on dinosaurs are much more intelligent than the rest, because they pay more attention to them and develop other types of skills to be able to address this curious fixation. Infants can also master the names of up to 25 dinosaurs (which is often a challenge for an adult), however, they do master the full name, periods and even their classification.
