W Rules: Phonics Workbook Reading Made Simple
Phonics, Language Development, ELA, Spelling, Kindergarten, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Reading Made Simple — Free W Rules Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Reading Made Simple for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. Tested by real children: One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' When I hear these reviews, I know that I have succeeded in my aim to write a phonics curriculum that can help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. These little workbooks are just one small part of what there is to offer. Please do check out the website for more information. Each workbook offers a gentle mix of activities built around the target sound. Children will read short passages that practise the new sound alongside words from sounds already taught, track and identify the sound within words to support both reading and spelling, practise spelling and sentence writing, and work through simple editing exercises where they spot and correct mistakes. These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. There is no obligation and no right or wrong way to use them. To print: print double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Fold in half to create your A5 booklet. The answer page at the back is optional. One sheet of paper. One sound. Everything a child needs to practise, consolidate and grow in confidence.

Phonic Reading Scheme for Older Students: IR: Book 33
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Reading, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, Literacy Readers, Teacher Tools, Worksheets & Printables

An IR Phonic reading book with matching PowerPoints and 27 worksheets to support learning. This book is part of an incremental phonics reading scheme with a difference. Introducing just 10 words in each phonics family, the words are repeated from book to book, giving even those with very poor word recall the chance to learn to read fluently without having to decode every word. Ideal for dyslexics, or those suspected of being dyslexic and all children with a special need. You can view the first CK pack with a set of 30+ supporting activities and games FREE here. The books cover these sounds and must be taught in this order: CK; OO; SH; CH; ND/NT; NK; TH; NG; AR; A_E, I_E, O_E, U_E, AI, EA, OA, IGH, IR Rationale: It has long been proven that teaching children to decode is a powerful tool for teaching reading, as opposed to the Look and Say method. However, this has led to a proliferation of reading books that throw as many words with a shared phonics sound into a book as possible, not realising that some children with very poor word recall find it hard to recognise words when they see them again without much repetition. To combat this problem, while we recognise that, technically, once a child has been taught a new sound s/he can sound out many words with that new sound, when it comes to reading fluently, a child needs a core set of words in each family that they can recognise, which can act as a launch pad as they gain confidence. These books have been designed accordingly. For each sound family, just 10 words are studied with the help of the workbooks and are then repeated throughout the books, each book building on the vocabulary that has already been learned, repeating it and including it in new phrases as new sounds are learned. As the programme progresses, new sounds from the learned families are incorporated to widen vocabulary, while taking care to maintain fluency. The books are designed to limit guessing (though most children will try and guess, which must be avoided at all costs). Pluses of this phonics reading programme Easy to print Cheap to buy compared with expensive reading schemes They are just as effective as the best reading programmes out there, and more importantly, they have been tried and tested on real children with severe difficulties and proven to work if the child is taught as outlined. Aligned with the aims and objectives of LETRS and the Science of Reading. They work! My pupils tell me if they don't work, so I re-edit them and try them before I put them out for the general public. Introduces most high-frequency words in the phonics family to which they belong, and gradually introduces genuine, non-decodable sight words into the text without causing overload or throwing the child off course. What is included? 1 reading books 1 matching PowerPoint, making it suitable for online teaching, for private tutors, parents, classroom assistants, etc... The IR pack book comes with 27 matching worksheets

Sieve of Eratosthenes, 400 numbers

Sieve of Eratosthenes, 400 numbers
Math, Numbers, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities

This printable sieve of Eratosthenes is 400 numbers long (instead of the usual 100). The Sieve of Eratosthenes is a good way to find small prime numbers. It goes as follows: 1. Cross out number 1 2. Circle next number that is not crossed out (the first one is 2) 3. Cross out numbers that are divisible by number you just circled Repeat faces 2 and 3 until there are nothing but primes left. This longer version gives interested students a possibility to examine further, how much prime numbers there are when we go further with the natural numbers. (This is interesting, because it kind of connects very simple school math with higher level mathematics. If students want to examine further, for example from Wikipedia, they will realize that the density of prime numbers (prime number theorem) is something that a number of very skilled mathematicians have spent countless hours with. Of course, knowing the first prime number is essential to survive with more complicated fractions in secondary mathematics (or higher). That way, faster students can find all the primes lower than 400 in the same time when some students may be able to find only the smaller ones. Each of these student groups will at the end of the day benefit from it. This one is free! The pdf is not editable and most suitable for printing and then doing with pencil and paper. This goes with different grade levels from upper elementary to high school.

This erosion reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Erosion Genre: Nonfiction (Informational Text) Subject: Science (Earth Science) / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: How erosion moves Earth materials and changes land Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): N What This Lesson Teaches Best Clearly distinguishes weathering (breaking rock apart in place) from erosion (moving pieces away). (Reading Passage, p. 3) Explains multiple forces that cause erosion— water, wind, waves, ice, and gravity —and what they do to Earth’s surface. (p. 3) Shows how rivers reshape land over time, including how moving water and sediment can help carve deep valleys (Colorado River/Grand Canyon example). (p. 3) Introduces sediment and connects erosion to deposition , explaining how new landforms can build up (beaches, river deltas). (p. 3) Connects science to real-world problem solving by describing ways people can slow soil loss (trees, terraces, keeping plants on soil). (p. 3) Learning Goals Students will explain how erosion is different from weathering using the text’s definitions. Students will identify forces that can cause erosion (water, wind, waves, ice, gravity). Students will describe how rivers move sediment and can change riverbeds and valleys over time. Students will explain what sediment is and how deposition happens when sediment settles. Students will describe at least two ways people can help soil “stay home,” based on the passage. Key Vocabulary From the Text weathering — breaking rock apart where it sits. erosion — moving soil and rock to a new place. sediment — tiny bits of soil and rock that travel. deposition — when sediment settles and builds up land. terraces — steps that slow water on a steep slope. Weather Chart and Science Activity: Record your daily weather!
Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Elementary, Early Learning, Classroom Decor, Posters, Activities

Turn your daily weather into a rainbow! Check out the weather type, match it to the color key, and fill in the weather chart. Kids love coloring in the chart and seeing how the colors change throughout the seasons. Also included are weather type cards with corresponding colors. This helps kids connect the weather type to the color on the chart! I used this with my 3rd graders and my 2 year old son at separate times. My 3rd graders were able to fill in the chart on their own each day, then tuck it away into a science folder. They used the data after a few weeks to chart the weather types and make a project from it. My 2 year old son really loved the weather cards. He liked looking outside each day and matching the sky to the card. I helped him fill in the correct box on the chart. This is a flexible free activity pack that kids of all ages will love!

Grade 2 McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders Words to Know - COMPLETE SET
ELA, Language Development, Vocabulary, Grade 2, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Practicing Wonders Words to Know is often a bit of a boring task for most students. That's why we made it a bit more fun. First of all, you can guide students through the book along with the vocabulary list. Here it shows the part of speech, the word, the definition and an example sentence. This way, students don't even need their books anymore to practice all of the words at home. Another fun element is the word search. This word search is based on the definitions, so the student is not given the correct answer right away. This way, they really have to dig into their memories to come up with the correct answer. After all of the practicing is done, it is time to do the test. You can present this by first giving the definition and then to let the student fill out the correct answer. The second part is a fill in the blanks exercise.

Guided Reading Level M - Shanghai (with Lesson Plan)

This Guided Reading Book - Shanghai (Level M) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: World Cities: Shanghai Genre: Nonfiction (informational text) Subject: Social Studies (Geography) Primary Topic: Shanghai’s location, waterways, and key city features Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): M What This Book Teaches Best Explains where Shanghai is located and why its place near the Yangtze River Delta and the East China Sea matters. Describes how the Huangpu River functions as a major waterway and supports large ships year-round because the water never freezes. Compares two parts of the city along the river—Pudong’s modern skyline and Puxi’s historic area, including the Bund. Connects landforms to city development by explaining Shanghai’s flat, alluvial plain and limited land. Highlights how waterways and islands shape life and trade, including Suzhou Creek, Chongming Island habitats, and a deep-water port for global shipping. Learning Goals Identify Shanghai’s location on the eastern coast of China using details from the text. Explain why the Huangpu River is important for ships, based on the book’s description. Describe how Pudong and Puxi are different, using evidence from the text. Describe Shanghai’s landform (an alluvial plain) and tell what that means for mountains or hills in the main city area. Explain how islands and waterways support wildlife, neighborhoods, and trade in and around Shanghai. Describe Shanghai’s climate and seasons as stated in the book. Key Vocabulary From the Text vital — very important. waterway — a river or channel ships can travel on. district — a part of a city. alluvial — made from soil rivers leave behind over time. tributary — a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What places in a city might be built near water, and why? Comprehension questions: Where does the text say Shanghai is located? Comprehension questions: What does the text say makes the Huangpu River important for large ships? Comprehension questions: What details does the book give about Shanghai’s climate and seasons? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this.
