The Phonics Advantage Progressive Emergent Reader Books slowly progress in the number of words on the page, number of words in a sentence, and the number of sentences on a page. The emergent readers reinforce sight-word vocabulary and word families. Great care was taken to use small decodable words, and to review words from earlier stories. These emergent readers are formatted for easy reading on student’s digital devices. They can also be read on all computer screens, and be presented on white boards for whole-class reading experiences. The emergent readers can be downloaded to student’s digital devices, emailed to student’s homes, or posted on a class website that is password protected and open to your classroom only. This download is for the first 15 emergent readers in Level 2. Level 2 is a mixture themed books and short stories written with small decodable words with one to three sentences on each page. The product is a zip file containing three PDF files, each having five emergent readers. For subject diversity, each PDF of five emergent readers contains a book on animals (rabbits, pet birds, goldfish), a trip (the row, the parade, school fair), and something to do (cotton-ball fun, pipe cleaners, potatoes). There are twenty books in Level 1, the first part of the early reading series. Level 1 is mostly themed books. Level 2 comes in two parts: Books 1 – 15 and Books 16 – 30. Like Level 1, Level 2 focuses on word families, small decodable words, and common word wall words.

Pinecone Counting Freebie This is a Pinecone Counting Activity that is perfect for your elementary math students. Preschool – 1st grade students can effectively utilize this activity . The objective of this activity is to correctly form numbers and work out sums. What You Get: A 1-page printable PDF that consists of the numbers 1-10 printed on pinecones with a blank log slice. How to Use the Pinecone Counting Freebie: You can do a number of fun activities with this Pinecone Counting Freebie, but first you need to prepare it! You will print this page and laminate it. After it is laminated, you’ll need to cut out all 10 cones and the wooden log slice. Some activity suggestions include: 1. Students will select a pinecone to place on the log slice. Students will identify that number and use a dry erase marker to practice writing the number correctly. 2. Students will select a pinecone. On the log slice, they will use a dry erase marker and draw objects to represent the number they chose. 3. Students will select two pinecones. They will add these numbers together and write their sum on the log slice. This can easily be made into a fun partner game or small group center with the teacher. The teacher (or the partner) can select the two pinecones, then show them to everyone in the group. Each person in the group will need to write down what they believe is the sum on their own log slice. This Ar Digraph decodable reading book is the 17th book in a series that can help children with special needs pupils develop reading fluency. Each book comes with a matching PowerPoint making it suitable for use in a range of settings. The Jack Stories, of which this book is one, introduces one phonic sound at a time, and subsequent books build on the vocabulary of the books before, constantly revising and reviewing learned sounds. Irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. Science of reading aligned. Based on the most up-to-date phonic research. These books should be read sequentially as they tell one long story, each telling a part. This book contains words with the following sounds: CK: OO, EE and SH and CH and ND Endings, TH and AR. The whole series to date can also be purchased as a growing bundle here, with a scope and sequence. This series has been written with the aid of one of my pupils, aged 8. He has drawn some of the pictures. SN Blend Find and Colour Phonics Worksheet to Develop Phonemic

This SN fun, Find and Color worksheet for initial blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the SN blend. What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on each worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheets unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. This pumpkins reading comprehension includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question.
