Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 9

This Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 9 provides an easy-read story, helping the pupil to begin to carry meaning from page to page and a multi-chapter informational text about boats, plus a poem. This book is the ninth in a series of books written to provide intervention for struggling readers using decodable reading books, written to build confidence and help the child attain fluency and comprehension. This book is useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even of 11+ who are struggling to read fluently, but who have a smattering of phonic knowledge but with gaps. It builds on the vocabulary of the books that have gone before. giving the child a familiar base on which to build. It follows: Book 1 CVC Words Book 2 Consonant Blends Words Book 3 More Consonant Blends Words Book 4 CK word Book 5 OO Words Book 6 Revise CK and OO with added extra basic vocabulary Book 7 Split digraphs, AI, EA and OA Book 8 A chapter story Who is this book for? Older pupils who can read, but who have a reading age well below their chronological age. Such children may struggle to read simple text with accuracy/fluency and thereby lack comprehension. It is not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my Graded reading books for such pupils. It is convenient enough for parents to use with their children, as well as for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps Having secured a child's blending skills with three and four sounds in books 1 to 3, and practised CK and OO words, we now start to extend the child's ability to decode new words with either one, two or three syllables. Assess the whole time as the child reads: if the child stumbles on a word, make a note to revise that phonic sound before continuing to the next book. I find that often these children need help distinguishing between similar words, such as back and black, and by retraining the child to read accurately using these simple texts - that do not look babyish - and then rebuilding from the bottom up, much progress can be made. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain at these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Simply print on A4 paper, two on a page. Cut into individual A5 pages, and staple or bind them together to make a book. Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills and have had years of failure. They must build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. These books, used as described, will help to build that foundation. I am finding an increasing number of such pupils desperate for help. You can help, too! This U-E activities Pack is designed to help children learn to sound out words with the u-e sound and differentiate between u-e and ‘u’, a common cause of confusion amongst young learners. This pack will give children much practice, which will, in turn, help them become more confident at sounding out such words. Who is the U-E activities Pack suitable for? All phonics learners, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /u-e/ sound will start to make every /u/ into a long /u-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this U-E activities Pack has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound u-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /u/ and some have a long /u-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. Animals to Color - Book of 10: Science Coloring Pages Here is a super pack of 10, hand-drawn pictures of animals for children to color. The study of the natural world is the foundation for the later study of science. The colouring of pictures of natural things, be it plants or animals, is more than a pastime activity. It is a means of familiarising young children with these everyday subjects. The coloring of these animal pictures can of course, be used as a pastime, or even as part of a creative lesson - the pictures look super framed - but they have the potential to teach much more. The UK National Curriculum for Science expects children to be taught to use the local environment to study plants and animals throughout the year. What better than to use familiar subjects - such as bagers, moles, hedgehogs and more to teach much about the natural world? Coloring can help children to become familiar with the parts of the Robin: ask questions: How is a fox like a stoat? Can you liken them to any of the other creatures? How is a hedgehog different from the other animals? Coloring a picture of an animal can also help children to become familiar with the characteristics of those animals - shape, habits, size, color etc... A colourful A4-size alphabet picture chart to help children learn to recognise the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. Each letter has a picture of an object that begins with that sound. 2 font styles are included. When children are first starting to learn letter shapes and sounds, it is helpful to have a handy reference chart that the children can use to aid recall or letter shapes and a picture cue to the sound each letter stands for. There are many ways to use these charts: Wall reference Desk reference - give one to each child; special needs children especially find them helpful. Wall reference: a wall chart Play quick games: Put a counter on the letter that says /t/, for example, and play until all letters are covered. Cut up the squares and ask the children to lay the letters in alphabetical order. Activities: Write me the sound that ...teddy... begins with: can the child write the letter straight away without looking? Does the child look for the picture of the teddy? Use to assess. Here is an ultra fun game to help pupils learn to 'Spot the 'e''' and change from vowel sound to vowel name! This game covers i/i-e a/a-e o/o-e When introducing the Final e/silent ‘e’/split digraphs/CVCV words, many children have difficulty quickly changing vowel names to vowel sounds and vice versa. This game can help to take the stress out of learning. How to play The game involves each player having a baseboard upon which to build his/her tower. Players aim to be the first to build their tower and win! Word cards containing both silent 'e' and CVC words are scattered on the table - with an 'oops' card hidden amongst them! Players take turns to choose a card. If it is read correctly, the player places it on his/her baseboard and begins to build a tower. Teachers and parents may give the child as much help as needed to read each word and turn it into a teaching opportunity. With more confident children, you can change the rules so that the card is returned face down to the table if it is not read correctly. If a player chooses the 'Oops' card, then the whole tower is wiped off the player's board and the cards are returned to the table, face down and play continues until someone manages to build their tower. Your pupils will have so much fun they will forget that they are learning! Games take the pain out of learning!
