Empathy SEL Skills Writing Challenge | Showing Kindness
P.E. & Health, ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Teaching critical social emotional skills while getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Practicing empathy takes time, and one of the ways we can set up safe spaces for our learners to think through the consequences of certain actions is by role playing and creating stories. This resource (and the others that complement it in this series!) seeks to provide the scaffolding needed for learners to imagine and begin telling a story in written form. Then they're invited into 5 different STEAM extension activities to keep the conversations going. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Remember, there are over a year's worth of writing activities in this line! Keep the fun stories rolling by checking out holiday, winter, summer, life skills, and adventure writing activities from Melissa Is Teaching! This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders as they take on the cognitively heavy task of writing a narrative, while also supporting them with the scaffolding and inspiration in the provided idea matrix. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4+ extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Phonic Reading Scheme for Older Students: I-E: Book 23
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Reading, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, Literacy Readers, Teacher Tools
This I-E Digraph decodable reading book + matching PowerPoint +21 supporting worksheets is in a series that can help children with special needs pupils develop reading fluency. Each book has a matching PowerPoint, making it suitable for various settings. This book is set in Saxon England. The Jack Stories, of which this book is one, introduces one phonic sound at a time, and subsequent books build on the vocabulary of the books before, constantly revising and reviewing learned sounds. Irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. Science of reading aligned. Based on the most up-to-date phonic research. These books should be read sequentially as they tell one long story, each telling a part. This book contains words with the following sounds: CK: OO, EE and SH and CH, ND & NT Endings, TH, AR, OR, A-E and I-E. The series of books can also be purchased as a growing bundle with a scope and sequence - one file, less clutter! This series has been written with the aid of one of my pupils, aged 8. He has drawn some of the pictures. What makes this phonic reading programme for special needs different? · It has its own, easy-to-download and print phonic reading books, making it accessible to many children worldwide. · Each book carefully builds on the vocabulary of those that have gone before, providing much repetition, without relying on predictable text. · Pictures aid the storyline without encouraging reading from the pictures – i.e. guessing. · The vocabulary is based on phonic families, which are introduced in a carefully planned way. · True sight words – those that cannot be sounded out - are kept to a minimum. Most words are introduced in their phonic family wherever possible. · It is truly multisensory, using the power of the hand. We not only look at the words, but we write them too. This is powerful and has the bonus of turning the child not only into a reader but into a writer as well. Worksheets to support the development of reading fluency The worksheets take the pupil from hearing the new sound in words, developing phonemic awareness, to reading passages in preparation for reading the book. It includes the following activities: Spelling Reading Tracking Changing letters to make new words Fluency triangles 3 reading passages A picture of a Saxon long ship to colour A picture of a Saxon man to colour. Typical signs that this programme can help: Those with dyslexia, or suspected of having dyslexia Difficulty recalling words when seen on flashcards or when reading texts, which results in no or little reading fluency b/d letter reversal of a chronic nature – i.e. the child has not grown out of it Difficulty ordering letters in words: E.g. top becomes pot. Difficulty differentiating between like words: spoon/soon; back/black; sheep/sleep etc… Difficulty tracking words across a page How long is the book? The reading book is 16 pages long. What is included? 1 PDF 16 pp X A5 Print as a booklet Flip on the short edge One 16-slide PowerPoint 21 Worksheets

Identify Expository Writing Goals- Choose Goals, Steps, & Then Reflect
ELA, Writing, Grade 6, 7, 8, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
The editable 19-page, differentiated, editable lesson, Identifying Expository Writing Goals- Choose Your Goals and Steps, Then Reflect, helps students become better writers because it makes goal-setting accessible for your students. Because they are given choice in their goal selection, they will be more invested in their writing. The low-prep, standards-based, comprehensive lesson plan guides teachers and students through the process of selecting goals and action steps, followed by a pre-writing and post-writing reflection. The lesson plan is very interactive with opportunities for students to discuss. Your ELL, RSP, GATE, and General Ed students will gain confidence and be positively challenged in their writing because they have their goals as guideposts. Here's how it works: Students choose one goal from each of 6 categories- Introduction, Thesis Statement, Body Paragraphs, Evidence and Analysis, Conclusion, Organization, and Structure. Each category has two Foundational Goals (goals needed to achieve proficiency) and two Extended Goals (goals for more advanced writers). Students get to decide whether the goal they choose is Foundational or Extended based on where their skill level is. After they choose their goal for each category, they then choose one step to take to make progress on their goal. In total, they have identified six goals and steps, but that is probably too many for them to focus on in one essay. So they decide on the two or three most important goals and steps they want to focus on for their essay. The lesson includes the following: a hyperlinked Table of Contents About this Resource- a guide that orients you to everything you need to prepare for your class, including links to the 4 student handouts standards- aligned, detailed lesson plan An essential question: How can setting and reflecting on specific writing goals improve my expository essay writing skills? 6 guiding questions: Why is it important to set specific goals for my writing? How can I identify my strengths and areas for improvement in expository essay writing? What strategies can I use to achieve my writing goals? How does reflecting on my progress help me become a better writer? How can feedback from peers and teachers help me refine my writing goals and strategies? How can setting writing goals make my expository essay more engaging and effective? Objectives and learning targets The following student worksheets: Expository Essay- Choose Your Goals Expository Essay- What Steps Will You Take to Achieve Your Goal? Major and Minor Political Parties in U.S. History and Modern Times
Social Studies, Government, History, History: USA, Grade 7, 8, 9, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
Your students might have questions about our 2-party system, the differences between the Democratic and Republican parties, and what it means to be an Independent or a member of a third party. Major and Minor Political Parties in U.S. History and Modern Times-- Text and Questions is a 27-page interactive lesson plan which will answer your 7th through 9th grade students questions. (This lesson could also be used for 10th to 12th graders.) After doing a class K-W-L chart on our political party system, teachers can choose to give their students a two-column formatted text for annotation or "talking to the text" (to practice reading strategies, such as clarifying, questioning, connecting, and inferring), or as a single column copy of the text.
