Diagnostic Phonic Assessment Tool Kit: Phonic Test

Diagnostic Phonic Assessment Tool Kit: Phonics Test This resource is aimed at children up to the age of 12 (though it could well be used with an older child with a younger mental age) and aims to test foundational phonic skills. It can be used to help teachers assess a child's basic phonic knowledge and ability, and the results can then be used as a baseline on which to plan future work. The phonics test does not look like a test, and it is hoped that the child will enjoy the activity and not be aware that they are being tested and therefore, perform well. What is included? The Phonics Test includes an 87-slide PowerPoint that takes the pupils from one simple activity to another. Each activity has detailed instructions to help the tester feel confident about administering the tests as well as guidance as to how to interpret the results. What is tested by this phonics test? Does the child know the sounds each letter of the alphabet stands for? Can the child hear the beginning sound of a word and match it to the corresponding letter? Does the child know the vowel sounds well? Can the child sequence 3 sounds to spell a word? Can the child hear the medial and final sounds of a CVC word? Can the child sound out to read CVC words with a short vowel sound? Checks for fluency in reading sentences with CVC words Can the child blend 2 consonants? Can the child blend 4 sounds in a short vowel word with a consonant blend - initial only, as I find that final blends such as mp are easier for most children, whereas final blends such as NK and ND are harder and are best left until the child has had more experience with phonics Can the child read a short passage with a mix of CVC and CCVC words? : Versatility The Diagnostic Phonic Assessment tool kit blends well within diverse educational amplifications: homeschoolers yearning structured guidance framing phonic programs like ‘Reading Made Simple’, public school teachers seeking extra reinforcement facilities for students falling behind in peer comparisons. When children are first starting to learn letter shapes and sounds, it is helpful to have a handy reference chart that the children can use to aid recall or letter shapes and a picture cue to the sound each letter stands for. There are many ways to use these charts: Wall reference Desk reference - give one to each child; special needs children especially find them helpful. Wall reference: a wall chart Play quick games: Put a counter on the letter that says /t/, for example, and play until all letters are covered. Cut up the squares and ask the children to lay the letters in alphabetical order. Activities: Write me the sound that ...teddy... begins with: can the child write the letter straight away without looking? Does the child look for the picture of the teddy? Use to assess. Can you tell me which object begins with the sound ...../h/, for example. The child looks for 'h' and says 'house'. Let the children use their charts as they complete worksheets/write/spell. Cooperation Scavenger Hunt-An SEL Game

In this SEL game, students will learn and practice cooperation skills. They will be in groups of 3-4 and they will do a cooperation scavenger hunt together. There are 5 tasks for them to complete. They can complete these in any order they wish. There is a find the hidden objects tasks where students will work together to find the hidden objects in the picture. This resource contains 2 different hidden objects sheets to choose from or you could offer both types for the task. There is a task where the group will create a team name. Another task is about creating a special handshake made up of 6 moves. Another task of for the group to come up with 5 things they all have in common. Lastly, there is a task where they will do 10 jumping jacks or wall push-ups all together. This is a very fun, engaging SEL activity where there is a mix of physical movement, concentration, creativity and more. This activity is great for students in grades 2nd-5th. At the end of the activity, students can share their special handshakes, their team names, what 5 things they have in common with one another. It is also a time to discuss what type of cooperation skills were used in this activity. Here is a fun pack of 26 Alphabet Coloring Pages: Color the Alphabet and Learn Beginning or Initial Sounds! This teaching resource includes 26 coloring worksheets designed to help young children (or those with a special need) become familiar with the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they stand for—the beginning sounds. Each page focuses on one alphabet letter: the children colour the large letter at the top of the page and say the 'etter's sound. Then, they must look for things that begin with that sound and color them. A challenge to make the sheets more beneficial: For every sound except 'A', every page contains a picture of one object that begins with the previous sound in the alphabet. Can the pupil find it? This ensures that the work is systematic and provides revision. Teaching tips: Pupils need to learn to hear the beginning sound of words, not just learn the sounds made by the letters. To this end: Help the child, if necessary, by emphasising the beginning sound: you can hold onto it until to help the child hear it.
