Crossword Puzzle for Vocabulary and Spelling: In the Kitchen

Crossword Puzzle for Vocabulary and Spelling: In the Kitchen
ELA, Language Development, Spelling, Writing, Grade 1, 2, 3, Crosswords Puzzles, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables

This crossword puzzle is for students that are learning spelling, or already master spelling but want something colorful to practice further. This crossword is also suitable for students who are studying English as their second language. In this crossword, there are images as hints and students have to name the images to the horizontal rows of the crossword. The lines are connected so when the crossword is filled correctly, a hidden message will appear in the emphasized vertical row. The hidden message will be: Cooking food with family. The benefit of this kind of crossword puzzle is that once students understand the simple concept, they are able to proceed themselves if they find any familiar words. The answer of the crossword is on the second page, but students are able to tell themselves whether they are right or not. If the hidden sentence is meaningful they are most likely to have done it right. If it doesn’t make sense, they will realize that; and then they can co-operate with their classmates to find the right solution. In other words, this worksheet is self-checking. This is a print-and-go and ready-to-use resource which can also be added to centers , or provided for substitute teachers. There are 21 words in this crossword such as spoon, fork, toaster, kettle, fridge, pan, oven, blender, microwave, whisk, ketchup, masher, mixer, oil, bottle, tray. As some of the words may not be familiar to all students, this can be done also with pairs or small groups. This material is a printable pdf and answers are included.

Desert Survival Plan Writing Challenge | Geography & Skills!

Desert Survival Plan Writing Challenge | Geography & Skills!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Deserts are fascinating parts of the globe. Your 2nd-5th graders will choose from 4 deserts across the globe to write a story about their companions on this survival journey, the materials they'll use, and the features of the desert they'll put to use as they survive their desert journey! Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about space and demonstrating their knowledge of it. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. *Note, some learners may require a basic explanation of what stocks, investments, and savings accounts are. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Growth Mindset Strategies SEL Skills Writing Challenge

Growth Mindset Strategies SEL Skills Writing Challenge
P.E. & Health, ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Teaching critical social emotional skills while getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Growth mindset is a skill we learn through practice, and building resilience. Sure, we could have a conversation about it, but apart from the actual succeeding and failing we do in real life, one of the best ways to learn it is by role playing and creating stories. This resource (and the others that complement it in this series!) seeks to provide the scaffolding needed for learners to imagine and begin telling a story in written form. Then they're invited into 5 different STEAM extension activities to keep the conversations going. Remember, there are over a year's worth of writing activities in this line! Keep the fun stories rolling by checking out holiday, winter, summer, life skills, and adventure writing activities from Melissa Is Teaching! This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders as they take on the cognitively heavy task of writing a narrative, while also supporting them with the scaffolding and inspiration in the provided idea matrix. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4+ extension activity ideas included in this printable.
