Hermann von Helmholtz - Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) Hermann von Helmholtz – Sensory Physiology Made Understandable Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Exercises (PDF + H5P) This material introduces students in grades 7–10 to the life and research of Hermann von Helmholtz – one of the key figures behind our scientific understanding of vision, hearing, and nerve conduction. Even if students already know a bit about how our senses work, most are surprised to learn how long ago these topics were explored in depth – and by whom. Helmholtz’s work at the intersection of biology, physics, and medicine still shapes modern neuroscience today. To make this complex content more accessible, I put together a compact set of resources you can easily use in a 45-minute lesson. It includes a short text, a fact sheet, quiz questions (with answers), and a few creative tasks to get students thinking and interacting. You’ll find both color and black-and-white versions – great for printing or digital use. There’s also an H5P version for those who prefer an interactive format. What’s included: A short, student-friendly text on Hermann von Helmholtz and his key discoveries A fact sheet activity to help students organize the main ideas Quiz questions (with solutions) to check understanding An open-ended task where students come up with their own questions and exchange them with a partner Ready-to-print or use digitally (PDF + H5P) Answer key included for quick correction I’ve used this in biology class as part of a unit on the nervous system, but it also fits well in lessons on sensory organs, neuroscience, or even the history of science. The material works for independent work, partner activities, or as a simple introduction to one of the most influential scientists of the 19th century. No extra prep needed – just pick the version that suits your classroom best. 🚀 Download now and bring the legacy of Hermann von Helmholtz into your biology lessons today! 📍 Best wishes, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Inca Empire Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Reading Comprehension, Reading, History, Social Studies, Science, Geography, Technology, Pre-Reading, Language Development, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans
This Inca Empire reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Inca Empire Genre: Nonfiction (informational passage) Subject: Social Studies (History) / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: Cusco, roads, quipu records, terraces, legacy Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): S What This Lesson Teaches Best How Cusco grew from a small kingdom into a larger Inca state in the 1400s under a leader named Pachacuti, and how the state was called Tawantinsuyu (the Realm of the Four Parts). How Inca engineers built a wide road system with stairs cut into rock and bridges, plus storehouses and resting places that helped the empire spread across western South America. How the Inca kept records without an English-like alphabet by using a quipu (cords with knots and colors for counts and notes). How terraces were used on hillsides to hold soil and water for crops like potatoes and corn, and how work was organized by the state as a kind of tax. How the empire ended after conflict and Spanish conquest, while people and culture continued (Quechua still spoken; terraces and stone places remain). Learning Goals Describe how Cusco changed in the 1400s and name the Inca state described in the passage. Explain how roads, bridges, and storehouses helped the Inca move messages, supplies, and armies. Explain what a quipu is and what it could record, based on the text. Describe what terraces are used for and how they helped farming on hillsides. Identify what happened in the 1500s that led to the end of the empire and one way Inca life continued afterward. Key Vocabulary From the Text Tawantinsuyu — the Inca state called the Realm of the Four Parts. chasquis — runners who carried messages from stop to stop. quipu — cords with knots and colors for records. terraces — flat steps that hold soil and water. storehouses — places along routes that kept needed supplies. Students will explain how television changed quiz shows, including what it was like for contestants under cameras and lights. Students will explain what “rigged” means in the passage and why quiz shows had to “rebuild trust.” Students will identify ways quiz shows appear today (board, screen at home, or podcast), based on the passage. Niels Bohr – A Look at One of the Founders of Atomic Theory Informational Text, Student Tasks, and Interactive Quiz (PDF + H5P) 🧪🔬 A ready-to-use classroom resource for grades 7–10 🧪 This material introduces students to Niels Bohr and his ideas about the atom – ideas that still shape how we teach atomic structure today. The text is short and easy to follow, so it works well for younger students or for those who are just starting to learn about atomic models. I’ve used this kind of format when I needed a quick but meaningful activity – for example, during a unit on atomic theory or as part of a lesson on scientists and their discoveries. It’s also been useful in cover lessons, especially when someone without a science background had to step in. Everything is included and explained clearly. What’s in the file: A short reading text about Niels Bohr A profile worksheet for students to fill out Quiz questions with an answer key Two optional tasks: – Students write their own questions – Students answer a partner’s questions You get everything as a printable PDF, a modifiable .docx file (text only), and a simple H5P version for use in digital learning systems How you might use it: Students can read the text alone or in pairs. They then fill in the profile and answer the quiz questions. If there’s still time, they can come up with their own questions about the text and swap them with a classmate. The H5P version is helpful if your students are working online or if you want them to check their answers themselves. It’s a flexible resource that doesn’t need a lot of explanation – and works just as well in regular science lessons as in emergency planning. Have fun exploring the world of science with your students! Warmly, Lernfitness Did You Know? Social Studies, First Peoples (Native), Math, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets
Circumference and Area of Circles with First Peoples' Principles is a teaching resource that combines math education with a basic introduction to two cultural traditions from indigenous groups. It is suitable for middle grades students in 6th to 8th grades. This lesson provides a practical application of geometry by instructing students on how to calculate the areas of rectangles as well as the area and circumference of circles. The lesson plan blends hands-on activities with relevant mathematics concepts, helping students to understand math theory through real-life tasks. 1) Students learn what a button blanket is and its cultural significance. They measure the area of a "blanket" and calculate the area of the "buttons." Then, they cut out the buttons and glue them on the blanket in a design. Finally, they calculate the area of the blanket that is not covered by the buttons. 2) Students learn what a drum is and its cultural significance. They calculate the circumference of the "drum." Then they determine the area and circumference of a piece of rawhide that would be needed to overhang and cover the drum. This flexible lesson can be used in whole-class sessions to guide every student step by step. It may also serve as a resource for small group work or homework assignments, promoting independent problem-solving skills outside school hours. Grades to Use With: This product is specifically designed to align with the British Columbia Mathematics 7 curriculum requirements, but it can fit into any learning environment studying circle areas & perimeters - ranging from middle school math classes, high school social studies lessons, or high school special education. The worksheets also help meet CCSSMP1 standards. What's included: An easy-to-follow four-page PDF including two student worksheets.
