Flash Fiction: 24 Creative Writing Prompts for Students

Flash Fiction: 24 Creative Writing Prompts for Students
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grade 6, 7, 8, Writing Prompts, Worksheets & Printables

Flash Fiction: 24 Creative Writing Prompts for Students is a slideshow designed for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and includes 24 Flash Fiction Prompts as well as a slide explaining what Flash Fiction is with links to examples, and directions for the students. This slide show is perfect for writing warm-ups, Do Nows, a Creative Writing elective, a Creative Writing unit, or daily practice. The purpose of this slideshow is for students to develop a writing practice in which they write quickly for a short period of time. The goal is to create one or more very short stories of 1000 words or less. Students can choose to write to as many or as few of the slides as they would like over time or they can choose to take one of their Flash Fiction stories and develop it with the idea being that their story will be 1000 words or less. How I use it: I share 3 slides with my students each time we write. I go over each slide first. Over the course of 20-25 minutes, they write to one, two, or all 3 of the slides of their choice. They have 20-25 minutes to write. The next time we write, I include the original 3 and I add 1 or 2 more slides. Eventually, they will see the whole slideshow. Every few days, instead of writing, students break into small groups and choose one of their stories to share with their group members for feedback. Over time, they will have many very short stories or beginnings of stories that they can develop. Students enjoy writing this way--it’s low pressure, it’s dynamic, they have a choice, and it’s fun. If you’re ready to take back the love for writing in your classroom, my writing prompt bundles can do just that! These unique bundles combine creativity, writing tips, and variety that is certain to engage your students! What is this? This is a World History Writing Prompt Bundle that is a 61-page printable accessible as a PDF file. Within this bundle, you will receive “writing hacks” that are filled with the do’s and don’ts of writing as well as proofreading tips. Each writing page will present students with a historical event that they will research and write about it. There is also a blank page at the end. How do I implement the World History Writing Prompt Bundle? Whether you have just introduced informative writing, or you are reviewing this writing skill, there is an opportunity to utilize this bundle. You should print off the writing tips page for each student. For the writing pages included in the bundle, you can: -Print off all the pages, -Print off select pages if you can only implement a few at a time, or -Have students pick pages that interest them. When students have the writing pages they are going to complete, students can work with a partner or small group to brainstorm and come up with ideas. Being able to work with classmates can often take the intimidation out of the writing process. Give students time to write down their ideas, which my brainstorming sheets can help with. When students are ready, they can begin their writing piece! I hope you enjoy! Ready to get your learners working in a more gentle on-ramp to your class time? Maybe your homeschool already includes instruction, but a gentle warm-up to your learners' writing instruction is a great way to keep them motivated to learn more! It's recommended kids get 30 minutes of writing practice each day. Sometimes this seems overwhelming for the adults in the room, as it requires planning, formatting, and thoughtful composition. This resource has you covered! Choose to print or use the digital version. Objective : Provide done-for-you writing prompts for both younger and older learners. Formats : Use the provided PowerPoint format, or upload the PPT to Google Slides and have students respond by typing their responses. This is a great motivator for students who enjoy typing more than writing by hand. It also provides a more streamlined checking feature for teachers and supervising adults. Grades : Designed for native speakers in grades 2-5, but applicable for learners in grades 6-12 who are beginning their English-learning journey. Variations : This resource is also available in French and Spanish. What you'll get: This resource contains a PowerPoint file with 64 pages.
