Acids and Bases - This TWO-DAY lesson package includes the lesson (student and teacher versions of the presentation), TWO worksheets with answers, FOUR embedded videos, and a student lesson handout as a document.

The student version of the presentation contains multiple blanks that need to be filled in throughout the lesson. These blanks are conveniently underlined and bolded on the teacher copy. I have found this to be the most effective means of keeping my students engaged and active without having them write everything out. This also leaves more time for discussion and activities.

Learning objectives

  • Define an acid and a base in terms of proton/electron transfer, and place substances on the 0-14 pH scale.

  • Explain how acid precipitation forms from fossil fuel combustion and describe its effects on soil and aquatic ecosystems.

  • Write and balance simple neutralization reaction equations showing an acid and base producing water and a salt.

  • Apply neutralization chemistry to two real-world cases: a chemical spill cleanup and acid reflux treatment.

Teaching tips

  • Use the student slide deck's underlined blanks as discussion prompts, then reveal the matching teacher slide to confirm the answer, since every blank in the student version corresponds to filled-in text in the teacher version.

  • Assign the chemical spill and acid reflux slides after the core acid/base/neutralization content, since both cases require students to already recognize neutralization equations.

  • Use the Student Lesson Outline document as a take-home or absent-student version of the same fill-in-the-blank content covered in the slides.

Skills covered

  • Acid/base classification — students place example substances on the 0-14 pH scale and identify their acid or base properties.

  • Neutralization equation writing — students complete acid-plus-base reaction equations that produce water and a salt (e.g., HCl + NaOH).
