When the children are picked up to ride the bus to Lakeview Elementary School in Montgomery, Alabama, they are reminded about the 1950s bus boycott that took place in Montgomery, Alabama. After arriving at school, Mrs. Clark (the principal) invites the students to the gym for an assembly about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK). At the assembly, the children learn more about this federal holiday and the life of this great man who campaigned for the rights of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement of the 19502 and 1960s.
