Building Words with Prefixes and Suffixes - Building Bigger Words

Use prefixes and suffixes to build upon root words, creating longer, more complex words. Students start with simple inflection endings added to words. Then, student move into adding prefixes and suffixes to root words. One word can turn into many by simply adding a variety of prefixes and suffixes. For example, the root word “play” turns into “playing”, “playful” and “display”. Following this pattern, students will be able to apply it to create more complex words.
