Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Identify six common prefixes (pre-, re-, dis-, un-, mis-, mid-) and state the meaning each adds to a word
Identify six common suffixes (-ful, -ly, -er, -ing, -age, -less) and state the meaning each adds to a word
Apply prefix and suffix meanings to decode sample words such as disobey, mismatch, and homeless
Teaching tips
Post the example charts near a word-study or vocabulary center as an ongoing reference during a prefix/suffix unit
Have students sort additional vocabulary words from a current reading passage into the chart's six prefix or six suffix categories as an extension activity
Introduce the two example charts after the three explanatory posters, since the charts build on the general prefix/suffix/root concept those pages establish
Skills covered
Prefix and suffix identification — students recognize six prefixes and six suffixes and connect each to its meaning.
Morphological decoding — students use a word part's meaning to interpret sample words such as unkind, retell, and hopeful.
