Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Read and trace selected four-letter words.
Compare the sound-spelling pattern in a teacher-selected group.
Teaching tips
Cut the printed cards apart for repeated reading and tracing.
Select words by their actual sounds, not just the page’s vowel letter. For example, ck and sh are digraphs, bark has an r-controlled vowel, and host does not use short o.
Preview unfamiliar or sensitive words such as delt, hell and kill before selecting cards for beginning readers.
Skills covered
Word reading and tracing: practise selected words such as hand, tent and pond.
Sound-spelling comparison: distinguish blends from digraphs and notice vowel differences in groups such as ball, bark and host.
Good to know
Questions teachers ask about this resource
Do all words use an ending consonant blend?
No. The set mixes patterns: ck and ng function as digraphs, while other words have consonant blends or doubled letters. Select the group that matches the sound-spelling pattern being taught.
