Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify the geographical features of the Arabian Peninsula and explain their impact on the people who lived there

  • Analyse the early life of Muhammad and show its impact on Islamic teachings

  • Identify the key teachings of Islam and describe the duties the Five Pillars place on Muslims

Teaching tips

  • Each lesson plan carries a side column of the responses students most often give - on nomad life, on why empires collapse, on how people show religious belief - which lets you anticipate where the discussion will go before you open it

  • The plans are written against the regular worksheet set; the modified worksheets, the compressed readings and the note-taking slides are drop-in alternatives for the same topics rather than extra lessons

  • Two lessons can be run together: the Spread of Islam plan notes that no Do Now is needed if it follows the early-life lesson in the same class, and supplies an alternate question if it does not

Skills covered

  • Informational reading in history - students work through per-topic readings on Arabian geography, the caliphates and the three later empires, then answer analysis questions on what they have read.

  • Historical vocabulary - a unit glossary defines Arabia, Allah, caliph, Five Pillars, mosque, nomadic, oasis and Quran, and those terms then recur in the readings, the crosswords and the flashcard deck.

  • Map work - the geography section supplies a base map with mountains, desert and marshland labels and asks students to complete it from the reading.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Which parts of the unit come in more than one version?

Most of the student-facing material. The readings exist as the full worksheet set, a modified set with shorter readings and different tasks for ELL students, a compressed reading-sheet set, an information sheet set, and replacement note-taking slides and sheets. The tests, flashcards, lesson plans and Google Classroom booklet each appear in more than one file format as well.

How do the two test files differ?

"Islam - Test" is split in two: Part 1 covers the first seven learning targets, from Arabian geography to spreading Islam in Arabia, and Part 2 picks up the rest including minorities under Islamic rule. The separate "UNIT 2 - ISLAM - TEST" runs the whole unit in one sitting, from the geography of the peninsula through Cordoba, astronomy and Islamic literature.

How does the included presentation compare with the one the preview describes?

The download carries a compressed, reduced build of the slide deck, still running to 346 slides with enlarged readings, animations and images that walk students through each topic. The preview page notes that a fuller version, adding more images, menu navigation and media links, can be requested from the author by email.
