Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Identify and write the correct initial l-blend (fl, gl, pl, or cl) to complete a word.
Match each finished word to its color under the key — fl green, gl red, pl blue, cl yellow — and shade it accordingly.
Teaching tips
Read the key aloud with the class first — fl, gl, pl and cl each own one color — because a student who picks the wrong blend also shades the word the wrong color.
Have green, red, blue and yellow available before handing the page out; those are the four colors the l-blend key assigns, in the order fl, gl, pl, cl.
Skills covered
Initial consonant-blend decoding — students determine which of four l-blends (fl, gl, pl, cl) correctly completes each word stem.
Color-code following — the key converts each blend choice into a color, so a finished page shows at a glance which words a student read as gl and which as cl.
