About This Product
Over the Summer I Used Math When: First Week Math Prompt
Do you need a quick and easy activity for your first week of math class in grades 2-6? Do you want to show your students how they use math in their everyday lives and why it's such a useful life skill? Here's an easy printable to add to your math curriculum.
How to Use:
Simply choose the border you prefer: gold, multi-colour, or black loops, and print one sheet for each of your students.
Read your students a book that shows how math is used in everyday life. I like Math Curse by John Scieszka and Lane Smith.
Then brainstorm some categories or math skills your students may have used over the summer: money, time, distances, fractions, ratios, and more!
Each student thinks of a time they used math and writes a sentence or two to explain it. For students in grade 2, that could be as simple as saying "I counted my toys" or "I used money to buy candy." Students in grade 5 or 6 may be able to provide more explanation such as "I kept track of what fraction of our road trip was done each day. After day 2, we were halfway there!"
Then students can illustrate their scenario.
These can make a great bulletin board display during the first month of school!
Grades to Use With:
This activity can easily be used in grades 2-6 in elementary school classrooms during the first week of school.
