About This Product

I designed this activity to bring physics concepts to life through active learning as I've found this is the best way to engage your students and keep them interested.

This pendulum experiment offers students an engaging opportunity to uncover the foundational principles of harmonic motion utilizing basic materials - string, weight, and stopwatch. Students will conduct their own investigations into the relationship between a pendulum's length and periodic time. By changing the pendulum length and measuring the effects, they will gain firsthand experience with core physics ideas like period, gravity, and oscillation.

This lab is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and facilitates key educational goals for middle and high school students. Learners will:

  • Discover how pendulum length impacts swing period

  • Practice forming hypotheses and collecting data

  • Analyze results to identify patterns and variables'

  • Develop scientific thinking skills including critical analysis

This experiment can also be used for a variety of grade levels and learning abilities. It's a very simple lab but one that is meant to test your students' ability to perform the scientific method rather then test their previous understanding.

Inside the lab you get:

  • Step-by-step guidance for setup and facilitation

  • Best practices for reliable data

  • Reflection questions that relate specifically to the lab

  • Extension questions to build on concepts
