Resources Choice Board

Following through on academic tasks requires material motivation for students who struggle initiating work independently. This customizable choice board resource empowers children (especially those with special needs) to select tailored items that aid individual learning needs and boost engagement with classroom activities.

The foundation consists of a blank choice board grid displaying 8 picture box spaces per page. The accompanying word/image deck contains 12 illustrated resource cards to slip into designated boxes, including: pencil grips, counters, mini whiteboard, slantboard, weighted lap pad, headphones, wiggle seat, sensory fidgets, lined paper, alphabet strip, number line or multiplication chart.

Teachers and students collaboratively select which personalized supports suit that child’s unique needs to feature, rotating items over time. To use teachers can laminate and put velcro on the back of the cards so they can be easily moveable and reusable. This scaffolds executive functioning skills for children who struggle voicing resource needs independently.

Having tailored focusing tools and accommodations pre-identified prevents off-task behaviors from escalating into avoidant meltdowns. It builds students’ self-awareness around items actually helpful for their learning style.
