Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

Students will define and correctly use eight grade-3 vocabulary words per unit in context.
Students will complete sentences by selecting the correct vocabulary word from a word list.
Students will locate vocabulary words in a word search using definition clues rather than the words themselves.

Teaching tips

Introduce the word, part of speech and example sentence before the cloze page and definition-clued search. Each unit has four pages; print pages 1–3 of each file for students.
For Unit 2, define awkward as uneasy or lacking coordination rather than “in an uneasy way.” Rewrite sentence 5 as “I made an ___ to score a point” to match the noun attempt.
For Unit 6, read alarmed as “made to feel frightened” and possess as “own or have.”

Vocabulary acquisition — students learn 48 words (eight per unit) with definitions, parts of speech, and example sentences.
Cloze sentence completion — students select and write the correct vocabulary word to complete eight sentences per unit.
