Product description
From the author
This resource Solving Systems of Linear Equations by Substitution Practice 1 focuses on solving systems of linear equations by using substitution. It includes six problems of just solving and then six word problems.
Students must state what each variable represents, write two equations, and solve. There isn't room to solve the equations on the paper, but there are lines for each part of the answer which makes this worksheet easily graded. You may also choose to use this resource as solving systems of linear equations by elimination. Due to fractions and large numbers, I would not recommend using it for solving systems of linear equations by graphing.
This resource may be used from eighth grade through high school. Students will have a better understanding of how to solve systems of linear equations by substitution once they finish this practice. You may also use this resource as homework to reinforce what was taught in class.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Students solve systems of two linear equations using the substitution method.
Students translate word problems into systems of two linear equations by defining variables.
Students check a solution against both original equations.
Teaching tips
Use pages 3-4 as the student copy and pages 5-6 as a self-check or grading reference, since the two are identical except for the filled-in solutions.
Have students show their substitution work on separate paper, since the worksheet itself only provides lines for the final answers.
Pair problems 7 and 8, since both involve linear cost equations, to highlight how the same setup process applies across different contexts.
Skills covered
Solving systems of linear equations by substitution.
Translating word problems into systems of equations.
Defining variables and writing corresponding equations.
