About this resource

Welcome your students to the enchanting and exciting world of shapes! With our 2D Shapes Flat Posters, your students can explore 12 shape labels in two unique and colourful ways. These 24 vivid posters, featuring real-life images, help your students make connections between the shapes and their own environment. These posters provide an amazing visual representation to aid your students in recognising two-dimensional shapes all around them. They are perfect for helping young learners build their maths/shape vocabulary!
There are 12 printed labels and 24 photo posters, supplied in two overlapping 24-page PDF layouts (48 physical pages total). The labels are: circle, oval, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon. Each label has two photograph posters; diamond and rhombus use the same examples. Especially useful in Nursery (Early Years) and Year 1 as students are being introduced to shapes and their names.

Continue the learning by using the 3D shape version of these posters! You can download them on Teach Simple by clicking here.

K.G.A.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.

With separately supplied 3D examples, extend to K.G.A.3: Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”).

K.G.B.4 Analyse and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Name each of the 12 basic two-dimensional shapes shown.

  • Recognise a shape regardless of its size or orientation, using the two varied posters per shape.

  • Distinguish two-dimensional (flat) shapes from three-dimensional (solid) shapes when paired with the companion 3D poster set.

Teaching tips

  • Display each shape's two posters side by side so students see the shape's name applies across different sizes and orientations, not just one fixed image.

  • Pair this set with the matching 3D shape poster set to reinforce the flat-versus-solid distinction.

  • Post one shape at a time when first introducing shape vocabulary, then display the full set as an ongoing classroom reference.

Skills covered

  • Shape identification — students learn to name 12 two-dimensional shapes from circle through octagon.

  • Shape generalisation — two varied posters per shape help students recognise a shape across different sizes and orientations rather than memorising one image.

  • 2D/3D distinction — used alongside the companion 3D poster set, the collection reinforces flat-versus-solid shape vocabulary.
