Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify a prefix or suffix embedded within a whole word
  • Combine a given prefix (un-, re-, pre-, dis-, mis-, mid-) with a root word to build a new word
  • Combine a given suffix (-ing, -ed, -s, -es, -er, -ful, -ly, -y, -ness, -less) with a root word to build a new word
  • Distinguish prefixes from suffixes within full sentences during a mixed review

Teaching tips

  • Sequence the 45 pages across multiple weeks rather than one sitting, since the set progresses from simple colouring to sentence-level mixed review
  • Use the picture-clue pages as a scaffold for students who need visual support before moving to word-bank-only pages
  • Since no answer key is included, create a simple key in advance or plan for whole-class review of each page type
  • Save the final underline/circle mixed-review page as a light formative check after both prefix and suffix pages have been completed

Skills covered

  • Prefixes
  • Suffixes
  • Phonics
