About this resource

The classification chart shows how broad groups of matter divide into more specific categories. Pupils fill the blank boxes with examples for the four subtypes after distinguishing mixtures from pure substances. Use familiar examples during discussion and ask pupils to explain which characteristic places an example on a particular branch.

Curriculum reference — England: Elements and compounds exceed the primary labels in the source; do not map mechanically. The chart distinguishes mixtures from pure substances; dissolving and separation practicals are not included. Selected skills only; reference stage is not an overall reading age, complete curriculum coverage, or an automatic recommendation for every learner.
