About this resource

We have so many new skills to teach our young learners, so ensuring that we can keep them engaged very early on is so important. Two ways to do this is by incorporating topics they are interested in and by providing them with hands-on activities.

This is a Counting Dinosaurs 1-20 Printable that is great for your preschool and kindergarten students. You can use this to introduce numbers 1-20 or review them for students who have already mastered number identification.

It is a 6-page printable. You may choose to print copies of each page for every student to complete. It may also be good to print and laminate and allow students to use dry erase markers to complete. Students will love getting to engage in an activity with an alternative writing tool, such as a dry erase marker.

On the first 4 pages, students will count the cars in each row and trace the number beside the dinosaurs. The total number of cars goes to 20. On the 5th page, students will trace numbers 1-20. On the 6th page, students will trace numbers in a backwards order 20-1.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students will count dinosaurs arranged in a row (up to 20) and trace the corresponding numeral, then practice writing numbers 1-20 in both forward and backward order.

Teaching tips

  • Since the activity is entirely trace-based with no cutting or gluing, it prints well for lamination and reusable dry-erase practice. Pages 1-4 (counting) can be assigned separately from pages 5-6 (numeral tracing only) depending on whether a student needs counting practice, tracing practice, or both.

Skills covered

  • One-to-one counting — counting dinosaurs arranged in a row, up to 20

  • Numeral formation — tracing the corresponding number beside each counted row

  • Number sequencing — tracing numbers 1-20 in both forward and backward order

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Does this include practice counting backward, not just forward?

Yes -- page 6 has students trace the numbers 1-20 in backward order (20 down to 1), in addition to the forward-order tracing on page 5.
