Flat and Solid Shapes Worksheet

The worksheet presents a mixed set of plane and solid shapes, each identified by a letter. Learners place those letters into four categories: flat, solid, has corners, and no corners. They then count how many shapes belong in each category, adding a numerical summary to the classification. Because corner status and dimension are separate properties, figures may be considered under more than one heading. A geometric classification reference supports verification.

About this resource

This worksheet is great for helping students sort shapes into different categories based on specific shape attributes.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Classify a shape as flat or solid

  • Determine whether a figure has corners

  • Count members assigned to a geometric category

Teaching tips

  • Complete flat-versus-solid first, then revisit the same figures for corner status.

  • Ask why the category totals need not add to the number of unique shapes.

Skills covered

  • Shape classification — figures are grouped by dimension and corners.

  • Attribute reasoning — separate properties are applied to the same set.

  • Category counting — learners total each completed group.
