Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Compare the population size, power, and tax burden of France's three pre-revolutionary estates
  • Explain why the Estates system was considered unfair to the Third Estate
  • Represent a historical concept visually through an original cartoon or written facts
  • Interpret the meaning of a political cartoon in its historical context

Teaching tips

  • Follow the teacher's own two-day sequence: pages 5-6 as guided fill-in on day one, the cartoon project and political-cartoon interpretation on day two, per the instructions page.
  • Use the answer key on page 7 to check the estates chart before moving on to the cartoon project, so misconceptions don't carry forward.
  • Discuss the 'debatable' framing built into the answer key's first question (what counts as 'power') as a class discussion rather than a single right answer.

Skills covered

  • Historical comparison
  • Visual interpretation

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Is the estates comparison chart the same activity as the cartoon project, or a separate one?

Separate — the chart (pages 3-7) is a fill-in-the-blank comparison exercise with its own answer key, while the cartoon project (page 8 onward) is a distinct drawing/fact-writing activity using a different student handout.
