About this resource

Imagination Workout Set 1

This five-page PDF contains 45 mini drawing starters, with nine boxes on each page. Students turn a printed line or shape into an original picture. Use a page for creative practice or let learners choose a few boxes for a short drawing session.

Compare different drawings made from the same starter and invite students to explain their choices. The supplied PDF contains drawing sheets; a writing extension is not included.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Extend a given starting line or shape into an original drawing using imagination and creative reasoning.

  • Practice divergent thinking by generating a unique visual idea from an open-ended prompt with no single correct answer.

  • Complete an independent creative task from start to finish using only the printed instruction as guidance.

Teaching tips

  • Use one page at a time as a quick, low-prep creative task, since each of the five is self-contained and needs nothing beyond something to draw with.

  • Assign a page as a brain break or early-finisher task, since each prompt is short and open-ended rather than a marked assignment.

  • Have students fill in the name and date field at the top of each page before starting, since that field is printed on every prompt.

Skills covered

  • Creative and divergent thinking — students transform an open-ended starting line into an original drawing with no single correct answer.

  • Fine-motor drawing — students extend a printed line by hand into a complete illustration.

  • Independent creative work — five separate prompts let a student complete open-ended art tasks with only the printed instruction as guidance.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How much guidance does each page give before drawing?

Every page carries the same short instruction — "use the given line(s) to create mini masterpieces" — leaving the specific direction of the drawing entirely up to the student's imagination.
