Learning objectives
Produce the /b/ sound at the start of six different words: bird, butterfly, bee, book, bow and banana
Follow a repeated sentence frame and notice that only the final word changes from mat to mat
Teaching tips
Each mat sits alone on its page, so a laminated set can be split between a centre and a small-group table without any cutting
Read the line aloud with the child before they start work; the frame is identical on all six mats, which leaves the changing final word as the only new thing to attend to
Save butterfly and banana for children who already hear the initial sound comfortably in the short words, since the longer words put more between the /b/ and the end of the word
Skills covered
Initial sound recognition — the same letter sound opens six different words across the set: bird, butterfly, bee, book, bow and banana.
Reading a repeated sentence frame — every mat carries the identical line "B is for ___", leaving only the final word to work out.
Vocabulary spread across word types — the six B words mix three small creatures, an object, something tied or worn and a food, rather than repeating one category.
