Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Apply the four criteria of living things (growth, eating, breathing, reproduction) to judge whether an object or organism is alive.

  • Distinguish living from nonliving subjects using observable criteria rather than appearance alone.

Teaching tips

  • Use the picture-based pages first as a whole-group model before assigning the draw-it or magazine-cutout versions independently.

  • Save the sticker version for a centre activity using small sticker sheets.

  • Pair with a nonliving-things picture sort so students practice the criteria on subjects that fail one or more tests.

Skills covered

  • Living-thing criteria application — students evaluate whether a pictured, drawn, or pasted-in subject grows, eats, breathes, and reproduces to judge if it is living.

  • Evidence-based yes/no reasoning — students mark smile/frown responses for each criterion before reaching an overall living/not-living conclusion.
