About this resource

This worksheet provides the students with the opportunity to learn about vocabularies that have many meanings in the same forms.

Each problem contains 2 pictures. The students have to choose only 1 correct choice by looking at the pictures first. Then think about the meanings of those pictures and transfer them into words. Finally, the students have to read the choices and circle the correct answers. This worksheet helps the students to expand their vocabularies and also helps them to be able to identify the differences and similarities of many words.

This worksheet helps students engage in their class very well with colourful, well-selected, and cute pictures. This worksheet is suited to young learners or students. The kids in these age groups love colourful elements or pictures in their learning. Especially kindergarten to second-grade students.

This worksheet contains 5 pages of the exercise in PDF format. The answer keys are not included.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Recognize that a single familiar word can name more than one thing (e.g., bat, bark, bowl, seal)

  • Match pictures to the word that names them by circling the correct choice from a short list

  • Build early sight-reading of short, high-frequency vocabulary words

Teaching tips

  • Read the word choices aloud with emerging readers before they circle, since every item depends on recognizing short printed words

  • After each item, ask students to say a sentence for each meaning of the circled word to push the multiple-meaning idea beyond picture matching

  • Use one page at a time as a warm-up or early-finisher task — the identical directions on every page mean no re-teaching between sessions

  • The pages work as a five-day vocabulary strand, one page per day, since the word choices differ across pages and run roughly alphabetically

Skills covered

  • Multiple-meaning word recognition — students identify words like bat, bark, bowl, seal, and stamp that can name more than one pictured thing.

  • Picture-word matching — students study the pictures in each item and circle the word from a short printed list that the pictures show.

  • Early decoding of short words — every answer choice is a short, familiar word (bit, pen, fly, jam, tap) that K–2 students read to complete the task.

  • Independent worksheet routines — identical directions and name/date headers on every page let students complete the pages on their own.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Do students need to write anything to complete these pages?

No writing is required beyond the name and date lines. Every item is completed by circling one word from the printed choices after looking at the pictures.

Are the same words repeated on every page, or does each page cover new vocabulary?

Each page moves to a new stretch of vocabulary, running roughly alphabetically: early pages cover words like bit, bark, bowl, and check, middle pages words like fly, file, hit, and lie, and the final page words like seal, stamp, stick, and tire.
