Transition Element Flashcards – Chemistry Symbol and Name Matching Set
STEM, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Basic Science, Holiday & Seasonal, Christmas, Holidays, Winter, Seasons, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games, Worksheets & Printables, Task Cards, Quizzes and Tests, Teacher Tools, Escape Room, Experiments, Projects, Centers
Transition & Inner‑Transition Elements Flashcards – Chemistry Symbol and Name Matching Set Holiday Theme: Christmas This is a printable flashcard set I’ve used in chemistry classes, mostly with upper secondary students. The cards focus on the transition and inner transition elements. So we’re talking about the d-block and f-block – the ones students often find harder to remember, especially when they all start sounding similar. I usually bring this out in December when we’re still covering content but everyone’s a bit tired and ready for a change of pace. The cards have either the element’s name or its symbol. Students have to match the two, and they can do that in pairs or small groups. It works like a memory game or just a straight matching activity, depending on how much time we have. Some years I use the cards just for review, other times we build sorting activities around them. Like dividing the metals into transition, lanthanides and actinides. It depends on the group. Advanced students sometimes add a use or a property for each element as they go, which makes it more of a challenge. There are a lot of cards – over 250 – but I don’t always use them all. You can just print the ones you need. I usually go with thicker paper or cardstock, and if I have time, I laminate them so they last. Once cut, I keep them in envelopes and reuse them next year. The design has a winter look – nothing too bright or distracting, just something that makes it feel a bit more seasonal without being silly. I’ve found it helpful for lessons when you still want students to work with real content, but in a way that feels relaxed. Especially useful before the holidays or at the end of a topic on metals. Everything’s in the file – all cards and a short page with tips. It’s been a helpful tool in my December lessons. 📍 Happy teaching, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Periodic Table Elements Domino Game – Christmas Chemistry Activity
STEM, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Basic Science, Holiday & Seasonal, Christmas, Holidays, Winter, Seasons, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games, Worksheets & Printables, Task Cards, Quizzes and Tests, Teacher Tools, Word Problems, Escape Room, Experiments, Projects
Periodic Table Elements Domino Game – Christmas Chemistry Activity During the last week before winter break, I like to keep my lessons calm but still connected to content. This chemistry domino game has worked well in that context. It gives students a chance to revisit the periodic table in a light way, without feeling like they’re doing a full review worksheet. The game is made up of cards that show either the name of an element or its chemical symbol. Students connect the matching parts, so that the end of one card links to the start of the next, just like with a regular domino set. I included all 118 elements, from Hydrogen to Oganesson, so there’s enough variety for most grade levels. Depending on the group, I sometimes let them use a periodic table as support. In other classes, we turn it into more of a memory challenge. Some students take it seriously and try to build the longest chain, others enjoy working in pairs or small groups just to go over what they remember. The cards have a light seasonal theme, which fits well with December lessons. They can be printed on heavier paper, and I usually store them in envelopes or folders by element groups if I want to use them again the next year. No extra materials are needed beyond scissors and maybe a bit of tape or a surface to build on. The setup doesn’t take long, and the atmosphere is usually relaxed. Students still talk about chemistry, especially when they help each other with tricky symbols. It works well in classes where energy is low but you still want them engaged in something subject-related. All the cards and a short set of instructions are included. I’ve used it in different grade levels, and it’s easy to adjust depending on time and ability. A simple idea, but one that helps bring chemistry into the room in a different way. 📍 Happy teaching, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Chemistry Element Symbol Game – Visual Matching Cards: Christmas Theme
STEM, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Basic Science, Holiday & Seasonal, Christmas, Holidays, Winter, Seasons, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games, Worksheets & Printables, Task Cards, Quizzes and Tests, Teacher Tools, Escape Room, Experiments, Projects, Centers
Chemistry Element Symbol Game – Visual Matching Cards (Christmas Theme) This is a chemistry card game I’ve used in class when we need something more hands-on but still connected to what we’re learning. It works kind of like “Dobble” or “Spot it!”, where you have to find the symbol that two cards have in common. In this case, the cards show element symbols from the first 31 main group elements. No names, just symbols – so it only works if students already know some of them. I usually bring this out in December, when the mood in class is a bit more relaxed but we’re still doing chemistry. The game moves quickly, and students enjoy it once they understand the rules. It doesn’t need any extra materials beyond the cards. Just print them, cut them out, and you’re good to go. There are 93 cards in total, with the same content but in three different shapes: round, square, and hexagon. I printed the square version because it’s easiest to cut, but the round cards look nice too. If you want to keep them for next year, laminating helps. I use it as a warm-up or at a station, sometimes even as a competition in small groups. The best part is that students have to look closely at the symbols and make quick decisions. It really helps with recognition. Some classes get quite into it, and others play more calmly – both work. You can also combine it with coloring beforehand. For example, color all Group 1 elements the same – that makes sorting and grouping easier later. It’s not a complex game, but it keeps the focus on the element symbols without turning it into a test. That’s what I wanted when I made it – something simple that still helps them practise. All the cards are included in the file, plus a short page with how to use them. 📍 Happy teaching, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Chemistry Flashcards – Match Main Group Element Names and Symbols Holiday Theme: Christmas This is a printable set of flashcards that I put together to help students remember the names and symbols of the elements. I’ve used this kind of thing around December when everyone’s a bit tired but we still want to do something related to chemistry. The cards have either the name of an element or its symbol, and students just try to find the right pairs. It’s simple, but they really do remember more that way. There’s a bit of a seasonal theme to the design, which makes it feel different from the usual review work. You can use the cards in all sorts of ways — I’ve tried it as a memory game, or just as a quiet task for pairs. It depends on the group. For students who are still getting to know the periodic table, I just give them a smaller set with the first 20 or so elements. For stronger groups, they can use the full set and even add extra facts to each card while they’re working. You don’t need anything special to prep the game. I just print the cards on thicker paper and sometimes laminate them if I want to keep them for next year. Once they’re cut out, you can keep them in small envelopes or boxes, depending on how you like to organize your materials. It’s one of those things that’s easy to bring in when you need something hands-on but still subject-related. The students enjoy it more than a worksheet, and they do actually talk about the elements while they play, which is always a win. You can also use it as a station or a warm-up during December lessons. All the cards are included, along with a short explanation of how to use them. 📍 Happy teaching, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? A Christmas Carol: Escape Room
Holiday & Seasonal, Holidays, Christmas, Grade 6, 7, 8, Escape Room, Activities
Need an after-reading activity for A Christmas Carol that will keep your middle school students engaged until break arrives? Try this NO PREP digital and a little prep printable escape room game that will have your students analyzing how Dickens both used and altered history and how this influenced his characters' perspectives. Use this escape activity to: 1. Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or characters and a historicalaccount of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history. 2. Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims. 3. Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text. This resource comes with both digital puzzles & paper puzzles but all the "locks" are digital! The first puzzle is an "easy win" to be sure and get all your students engaged. But don't worry, each puzzle gets a little bit harder as the students progress. That being said, these puzzles took my students 2 class periods to fully complete. As students "escaped", I gave them their reward - a small candy cane - but you can use whatever reward suits you and your class! (Candy canes are not included.) Your students will love this activity because it is interestingly challenging - they want to crack the codes!
