Reading Intervention programme for Struggling Readers

This is a series of decodable phonic books written for struggling readers. Struggling readers often have gaps in their phonic knowledge or have started to guess. These books help to retrain the child. They start back at the beginning with CVC words to ensure the child can read fluently at this level and to build shattered confidence. Sometimes children think they can read the easy books, but find that they have learnt to guess words which interrupts fluency and excludes them from comprehending what has been read. They build up from CVC words, through consonant blends words with a short vowel sound, to ck, oo words. More are coming! They are useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even those of 11+ who are struggling to read fluently. Pupils should be able to blend fluently and have some phonic knowledge, though it may not be secure. Who are these book for? Older pupils who can read, but who have a reading age well below their chronological age. Such children may struggle to read simple text with accuracy/fluency and thereby lack comprehension. They are not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my CVC decodable and CVCC readers for books for such pupils. They are convenient enough for parents to use with their children, as well as for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps Start at the beginning with book 1 (the books are labelled by file name, not on the covers so as not to belittle the pupil). Teach the sounds afresh and then let the pupil read the book when you are sure that s/he will succeed. As the pupil reads, assess what further work is needed t help the child progress and provide it. Look for more in this series coming shortly in my store. I am finding more and more such pupils desperate for help. You can help too! It is not hard but just needs a little understanding of the problem. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain at these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills. It is crucial that they build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. This book, used as described will help to build that foundation. With appropriate help and these books, they have all made good progress in a reasonable space of time (dependant also on ability as well as teaching). What is included? For each title, a book with reading passages and a fluency chart. Two PowerPoints with supporting teaching resources for books 1 and 2.

Two 18-page A5 booklets containing thirty-six worksheets on consonant blends (CCVC/CVCC) to aid reading and spelling, ideal for small hands. These worksheets on consonant blends were created to go along with our Consonant Blends Reading Books , which are a continuation of our CVC decodable readers. Overview The books are divided into two small workbooks that together have 36 pages of consonant blend (CCVC/CVCC) activities. While the second book focuses primarily on final blends (CVCC), the first book primarily covers initial blends (CCVC). Using the vocabulary covered in the reading books, these books provide additional practice in both reading and writing. The workbooks Introduce key phonetic words, such as 'and', 'milk' and 'end', as well as key sight words, such as 'I', 'no' 'go' and 'to' (having learned 'the', 'is' and 'of' in the CVC readers. Activities include: A variety of activities are included Hearing the consonant blends (CCVC/CVCC) in words and colouring the picture of things that contain a given blend. Who can use the consonant blends workbooks? Anyone who needs to help a child learn to blend consonant letters! They are suitable for class use, for home education or by parents or private tutors. They can be used alone or with the Consonant Blend Reading Books. These books are compatible with Letters and Sounds, Jolly Phonics and Read, Write Inc, but were written for Reading Made Simple. Instructions: Some children find it tricky to learn to blend consonant letters. Be patient. Once a child can hear a blend at the beginning of words and can blend any two consonant letters presented to them and further, write them when heard, they are ready to move on.
