This is the first lesson in the Reading Made Simple Learn to Read and Spell Programme for SEN Readers, teaching the short vowel /a/. It can help struggling readers achieve reading fluency, perhaps after several years of failure, even perhaps after having been taught phonics with another programme. The programme follows a course of highly structured, synthetic, systematic phonics instruction. Science of reading aligned. Based on the most up-to-date phonic research. This is the first of the 5 vowel packs, which should be undertaken in order: a, o, i, u, e. Objectives: To help children develop a core set of decodable words that they have seen enough times so that they no longer have to sound them out but can recognise them easily and recall them when needed. One of the biggest problems for struggling readers is that often, phonic reading books do not give the child a chance to see the same words again and again and so some children are forced to sound out nearly every word, which slows their speed of reading right down and means that they often cannot understand what they have read. Who is the programme for? This Learn to Read and Spell Programme is for children who have got stuck after learning to sound out CVC words and for whom reading fluency seems elusive. We gradually introduce blends gradually as one word, with a blend in the family included each week. Order, outlined and steps: The Reading Made Simple Reading and Spelling programme for struggling readers focuses the child's attention on around ten words containing the same phonic sound, at a time. For struggling readers, these lists are subdivided into two sets of 5 and the lesson is spread over 2 weeks. During these two weeks, the words are practised in various different ways: On flashcards provided Sentence building with the flashcards Speed reading of just the ten words Sentence writing activities Fluency charts Games Reading books which only contain the ten words, plus the true sight words: a, the, is in this first pack. The reading books should be used as a form of assessment and any words which the child needs to sound out ca be practised further, while you move on to the next sound. Multisensory: Children who struggle to learn to read often need a multisensory approach. This Learn to Read and Spell programme uses the power of the hand to provide the multisensory dimension so often lacking in many 'learn to read' programmes. The child not only sounds out the words to read, but also to write. The words are then put into sentences to read and write, building up as we go into longer texts Confidence building Because we are working with a discrete set of words, with the same sound, the child soon learns to recognise the words in each lesson, having sounded them out, read them, and written them many times in many fun ways. As the child reads each book, you can watch as s/he finally begins to say, 'I can do this!' as s/he meets familiar words. Oral Blending Picture Cards and Activities

Here are three simple activities with supporting picture cards to help a child to learn to blend orally. Blending sounds orally can be a helpful pre-step to sounding out words in text, for some children who have difficulty hearing sounds in words. Introduction: I wrote them for an 8 yr old child whom I tutor. He has a smattering of phonic knowledge, but having not learned to blend properly is now guessing and unable to read fluently. This is a common problem, but it must not be allowed to persist or the child will not learn to read fluently or will take a very long time to do so. If you are asking the question: "Why can't my child read accurately?" or "Why does my child guess words?" the answer is: because s/he had not learned to blend. The ability to blend is a vital foundation for all further phonic work. without it, a child will struggle to learn to read. Objectives: These activities will help a child to both oral segment words to separate the sounds in each word and blend them to put them back together to me a word. The words chosen for these activities are not written down, so no actual reading is required, for we are training the child to hear sounds in words, and we do not want the child to memorise the patterns of letters in words before she/he is able to understand the relationship between letters and sounds as we hear them in words. What is included? 3 suggested activities 48 large picture cards in colour: 24 mixed sounds, 24 CVC words 48 small picture cards in colour and black and white: 24 mixed sounds, 24 CVC words Various baseboards Although these activities are most useful when a child is first beginning to blend CVC words, the words themselves contain other sounds that will most probably/may not yet have been taught. This is not a problem as the child will not see the word written down and will not be required to sound out any actual written words. These activities are listening activities. This is a deliberate act to limit the amount of exposure a child has to seeing CVC words, before working on blending with him/her, further limiting the possibility that a child will memorise the words before learning to blend. More You can use the material to make games of your own. Grades/ages Although these activities can be used with young children who are just beginning to blend they are most suited to reading intervention work with older children.

Longtime fans have been asking us to make this long vowel resource for a while, and we have finally decided to take the plunge. It turned out to be a pretty awesome resource. First off, use the PDF based digital file to introduce these long vowel sounds to your students. You just open the file and show it full screen. Then use the arrow keys to go from one page to another. This way you can also stop the slideshow if something is too difficult for your students. After this, you can give them the digital multiple choice test. The correct answer will be circled in green and the incorrect ones are red. This makes it abundantly clear what the right answer is. But there are a bunch of printable files as well. How about the vocab lists en tests? And then there are the flash cards too, either with round or with sharp corners. All and all, a very complete resource to practice long vowel sounds.

This Olympic Themed Work Coming Soon Posters resource is great to create expectation of upcoming completed work done by students which deserve sharing and to decorate your class or hallway! We all know the beginning of the year, the hallways look bare with no student work on them yet. And those first few weeks are spent more on creating relationships and learning procedures, which leaves your walls or bulletin boards sadly blank. Problem solved! Print these off and use them as a place-holder for student work on a bulletin board or in a hallway. All of these are posters that fit in a regular page. Print various from each style so that students may pick the one that will be attached to their work, or you can pick which one works best with your printer situation and classroom decor. This U-E activities Pack is designed to help children learn to sound out words with the u-e sound and differentiate between u-e and ‘u’, a common cause of confusion amongst young learners. This pack will give children much practice, which will, in turn, help them become more confident at sounding out such words. Who is the U-E activities Pack suitable for? All phonics learners, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /u-e/ sound will start to make every /u/ into a long /u-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this U-E activities Pack has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound u-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /u/ and some have a long /u-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. Beginning Sound and Ending Sound Trains

Preschool and kindergarten students will have fun practicing phonological awareness skills by identifying the beginning sounds and ending sounds in words with these phonics trains. What is Included: In this phonics card set, there are 28 total words for students to use to practice recognizing beginning sounds and ending sounds of one syllable words. How to Use: The student will choose a picture card and then, they will build a train by placing the correct beginning sound to the front of the word and they will place the correct ending sound at the end of the world. Ways to Use: Literacy Centers - These train cards can be placed inside a literacy center for students to work alone or with a partner to complete. Morning Bins - These cards can be used as a morning activity for students to complete while waiting on classmates to arrive to class. Small Group Activity - Students who need extra help identifying sounds in words can be put in a small group to get further practice with this skill.
