2 Factor Authentication: Working Memory and Life Skills Activity

2 Factor Authentication: Working Memory and Life Skills Activity
Special Resources, Life Studies, Special Education Needs (SEN), Life Skills, Home Economics, Not Grade Specific, Activities

Here’s a real-world way to help your students strengthen their working memory while learning how to use 2 factor authentication: a useful life skill! What’s Included: 6 Page PDF: Ready to print and use! 1-page handout (2 versions: complete or fill-in-the-blank) that clearly explains 2 Factor Authentication: what it is, why it’s important, and how it works. 1-page student handout with instructions on how to complete the memory practice (with a partner or independently) and a printable keyboard to use during the activity. 2 pages of random numbers: 50 of each 4-digit, 5-digit, 6-digit, and 7-digit numbers AND 50 of each 8-digit, 9-digit, and 10-digit numbers How to Use: Give students the handout and teach them about 2 Factor Authentication. Next, explain the activity. Students can practice on their own or with a partner. They can start with 4-digit numbers, or you can assign a higher level based on your students’ abilities. Once they can successfully complete a drill of 10 numbers in a row from one list, they can move up to the next level of difficulty. You can make this a regular routine to help improve your students’ working memory skills! Student Instructions: 1) Either have a friend read you a code or put a ruler underneath the first code in the list you are working on and read it to yourself. 2) Practice memorizing the code. If it’s four digits, you could break it into two two-digit numbers or use another strategy that works for you personally. 3) Repeat the code aloud as you pretend to type it on the keyboard. 4) Practice 10 codes. If you get them all correct (you or your partner check them off as you go), move to a longer code list the next time you practice. Grades to Use With: This activity can be used with students in grades 4 and up as there are seven different levels of difficulty. It could be very useful in high school special education and life skills classes.

Ocean Adventure Writing Challenge | Geography, tasks, & resilience!

Ocean Adventure Writing Challenge | Geography, tasks, & resilience!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. The world's oceans are full of incredible places and species to explore! Learners will share about which ocean they explored, how they got there, something surprising that happened, and a task they had to complete while at sea. Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about space and demonstrating their knowledge of it. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. *Note, some learners may require a basic explanation of what stocks, investments, and savings accounts are. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project

Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project
ELA, Social Studies, Literature, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Projects, Activities

This Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project is a 41-page resource designed for grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. as a culminating project after a literature circle or book group experience focused on historical fiction. It can be modified for lower or higher grades as well. Working in literature circle groups or book clubs, students will read a historical fiction novel, analyze its characters, plot, author's craft , and historical time period, and present their findings to a small group. This project introduces students to the genre of historical fiction and helps them understand its importance and significance. By the end of the project, students should have a good understanding of what historical fiction is. Many students enjoy reading historical fiction, especially if they are learning about the period in their History/Social Studies class. In addition, if you teach a Language Arts/History Core or plan with a History/Social Studies partner-teacher, this is an excellent resource for both classes and provides students with a different way to engage with history. Historical fiction is an important genre for students for a several reasons, including making the study of history more engaging and interesting by making history come alive. Students also develop an understanding of how historical periods connect to today. It also provides students opportunities tothink critically about the events and people from the past, analyze and interpret historical events, and understand different perspectives. Lastly, by making the past accessible, historical fiction helps students develop empathy, tolerance, and respect because students learn to see history through the eyes of characters from different time periods and cultures The Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project includes the following: 2 ready-to-use lesson plans: Book Browse an interactive and comprehensive Genre Study Lesson Plan with common core standards, objectives, and learning targets Book Browse worksheet Easy-to-follow Project Directions Note Taking Guide Note-Taking Chart Spoke Diagram worksheet Character Chart worksheet Sensory Imagery Chart worksheet Other Elements Chart worksheet Storyboard Directions worksheet Presentation Directions Rubric for Literature Circle Discussions Daily Accountability for Homework and Classwork form Self-Evaluation of Historical Fiction Literature Circle Group Project Check-off and Grading Other Resources You Might Be Interested In: Book Reports: Autobiography/Biography Genre Study Book Report and Speech Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report and Essay Book Jacket Book Report Character Analysis Essay, Gift for a Character Book Report, and Oral Presentation Historical Fiction Genre Study Book Report Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project Poetry Book Report Mini-Reviews Book Report Mystery, Thriller, Horror, and Suspense Genre Study Book Report Narrative Nonfiction Genre Study Book Report Project Poetry Book Report Dystopian. SLANT Strategy Lesson-A lesson about paying attention and listening

SLANT Strategy Lesson-A lesson about paying attention and listening
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans

In this resource, students will learn about the strategy called S.L.A.N.T. This is a strategy to teach students how to pay attention and listen. This can be such a critical skill when students are in school, at home, and with their friends. SLANT stands for S-Sit up, L-Lean forward, A-Ask questions, N-Nod head, T-Track the speaker. Students will first be asked about what does "paying attention" and "listening" mean. They will also be encouraged to talk about who and what they need to pay attention to and listen to at home and school. Then they will learn about the SLANT strategy. They will be asked to participate in a partner activity in which they will tell about a happy memory for 2-3 minutes with a beginning, middle, and end for the story. They will then ask their partner a question about their memory to see if they were listening. The partner is allowed to ask 1-2 questions if they are unclear about some details. Next, they will swap roles and the person who shared is now the listener and vice versa. The PPT slideshow will prompt some questions about what was easy or challenging about this activity. The last part of the lesson is a fun game called "When someone claps twice." This is such a fun game that your students will want to play again and again. I placed this at the end of the lesson because you can play it as many times as time allows. There are 27 commands in the game . The teacher begins the game by passing out a strip of paper to each student. Some students may get 2 strips as there are 27 strips and you may not have 27 students. That is o.k.! It adds to the challenges. After the teacher claps twice, the student with the command "When the teacher claps twice, ..." needs to do the task on their strip of paper. Then the next student needs to do the task after the student does their task and so on. To reinforce the SLANT strategy, you can print off either slide 5 or 10 and put up in the classroom.

Founding the 13 Colonies- Vocabulary & Reading & Analyzing a Table
Social Studies, Government, History, History: USA, Grade 6, 7, 8, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans

Two lessons focused on American Colonial History are included in the resource, provide Social Studies Skill Building Opportunities for your middle school students. The Founding of the 13 British Colonies- Vocabulary Development and Reading and Analyzing a Table. The first, Vocabulary Building: familiarizes students with key terms so they can develop greater understanding of the founding of the 13 colonies. The second, The Founding of the Colonies Chart: Reading and Analyzing a Table: provides students with the opportunity to learn and practice various reading strategies, such as drawing conclusions, making inferences and comparisons, and identifying similarities and differences. The questions students will answer guide them through the reading of the table. The first lesson, Vocabulary Development, provides students with two vocabulary development strategies. First, students identify which of the following 8 words they know (and how well, if at all, they know them) using the Road Signs to Understanding Words handout which front loads the 8 key terms: Theocracy, Proprietary, Democratic, Joint-stock Company, Elected Assembly, Profit, Debtors, and Buffer. From their, they explore each of the 8 words using the K.I.M. Vocabulary Strategy: Knowledge (information about the word, its part of speech, and its variations in parts of speech); Information ((Definition(s) of the word), and Memory Clue Draw a picture or symbol to represent the meaning). They then write an original sentence showing they understand the word. In the second lesson, The Founding of the Colonies Chart: Reading and Analyzing a Table, students will read and analyze a table with information about the founding of each of the 13 colonies: Colonial Region, Colony/Date Founded, Leader(s), Reasons Founded, Type of Government. Students often need help in navigating information-heavy charts, especially if there are words and concepts they are struggling with. This lesson guides students through how to read and analyzing these key details. The chart is accompanied by 11 analytical questions with the final two questions asking students to reflect on what was most and least challenging about this assignment and why. Finally, there is a vocabulary assessment with 5 short answer critical thinking questions, in which students are asked show their understanding of the key terms by comparing, contrasting, and explaining the words. The detailed, standards-aligned lessons provide interactive and collaborative ways to approach these activities and includes An About this Resource Chart that easily references all the materials in the resource, including the standards, objectives, learning targets, an Essential Question, 2 Guiding Questions, among other things. The two lessons should take between 2-3 days depending on how you approach the K.I.M. Vocabulary.

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Christmas memories range from time in community to cozy family moments! Learners will explore different activities, people they spend time with, surprising things that happened, and lessons they learned.
