Description: 20 Consonant-Vowel-Consonant(CVC) Phonemic Awareness Task Cards.

Objective:

Segmenting and blending CVC words; breaking down CVC words with short /u/ into individual phonemes( sounds). Using Elkonin boxes or sound boxes helps students build phonological awareness skills by learning how to segment words into sounds. Sound boxes teach students how to count the number of phonemes in a word (not the number of letters). Sound boxes also help students better understand the alphabetic principle in decoding and spelling.

Grades: Kindergarten/First Grade.

Implementation Format:

a. See the word.

b. Say the word aloud.

c. Move It: Use your finger to move or trace the blue and red circles representing each sound(phoneme) in the word.

d. Blend the phonemes to read the complete word.

Individually or group work mini-lesson in which the teacher models how to use the Elkonin boxes.

Rhyme Time: play rhyming games by identifying word families and common phonetic patterns.
