Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Cities, sports, challenges, & wins!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Games, Activities
Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. The Olympic games inspire so many young people. In this narrative writing assignment, students will choose their city and sport, as well as what went wrong and what went well. Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about space and demonstrating their knowledge of it. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. *Note, some learners may require a basic explanation of what stocks, investments, and savings accounts are. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. Line Graph Assessment: Real-Life Math Problem for a Graphing Unit
Math, Graphing, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools
Line Graph Assessment : Real-Life Math Problem for a Graphing Unit This learning resource is perfect for educators teaching general math classes to grade 5-8, or high school special education classes with applied mathematics. It focuses on enhancing students' graphing and interpretation skills through a real-life scenario - a bike ride. How to Use: I used this task as a summative assessment at the end of my line graphing unit. Students had learned how to make line graphs, how to determine an appropriate scale, how to determine if the data is continuous or discrete and if the points of data should be joined, and how to read and interpret line graphs. This simple task melds all of those skills into one, easy-to-mark assessment . It allowed me to accurately assess my students' learning from the whole unit and was a great artifact to use for report card writing or parent conferences. Students are given the data from a bike ride (hours biked vs kilometers travelled), and they need to create a line graph with all of the appropriate features. Then, they will answer questions to determine their ability to interpret the data they have been given. Evaluation Areas: Determining logical vertical and horizontal scales and constructing accurately labelled line graphs/plots. Understanding how data is collected. Differentiating between discrete and continuous data. Interpreting line graphs/plots effectively. Making reasoned conclusions from specific sets of data. Identifying fractional/decimal information between different data points. Grades to Use With: This assessment is designed for students in grades 5-8 or in high school special education classes. What's Included: A total of 4 pages in PDF Format: Title Page 2 Page Assessment for Students 1 Page Answer Key: to easily assess each student out of 20 marks If you enjoy this real world math activity, check out many others in my store: Grace Under Pressure.

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. Create-A-Savings Story Writing Challenge |Saving, Spending, Generosity
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Money can be a tricky topic to teach. Even so, we know kids need to be better prepared than we were with regards to financial literacy. Investing, spending, saving, and generosity are all twists and turns kids can take as they get their imaginations rolling! What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

DOUBLING SPELLING RULE - 1:1:1 RULE with suffix -ing
ELA, Language Development, ESL, Grammar, Spelling, Strategies, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
1:1:1 Spelling Rule Practice Worksheet The 1-1-1 doubling rule plays a crucial role in English spelling, especially for upper-grade students. This rule is important because of the consistency. Unlike many other spelling rules, the 1-1-1 rule is very consistent. It helps students understand when to double the final consonant before adding vowel suffixes like “-ed” or “-ing. Mastering this rule enables students to move from reading and spelling shorter words to tackling longer, multisyllabic words with understanding and confidence. Objective: This spelling worksheet focuses on the 1:1:1 spelling rule and the practice of doubling consonants when adding the vowel suffix-ing. The goal is not memorization but understanding the rule’s application. Students will work with 18 words then will choose 3 from the list, and create an original sentence with the suffix “-ing. Grades: Upper elementary (helpful diagnostic spelling tool for older students) Implementation Ideas: Ideal for word work practice- learning stations for independent practice. Grammar Lessons: Use during parts of speech discussions. ELLs: learning morphemes. Assessment: Check understanding of the “-ing” suffix and the doubling spelling rule. Word Challenges: Challenge students to use the same word list and add the suffix -ed, what happens? Act out the words: Encourage students to act out words that are happening right now, for example: clapping, digging, and drinking Lesson extension: make it more interactive by creating word sorts, puzzles, and word-building games to reinforce the 1:1:1 rule. Instead of using this as a normal worksheet, consider having students show thumbs up or thumbs down in a group setting to indicate whether each word in the wordlist follows the 1:1:1 rule. File Type: PDF (3 pages) Use this worksheet to reinforce spelling skills and understanding!
