FREEBIE!! Visuals For Reset/Calm Down Areas
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Education Needs (SEN), Social Skills, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2,
In this FREE resource, you will get 3 visual wheels for a calm down, take a break, and reset area. This can be used in any classroom or counseling setting. There are 3 visual wheels; one for feelings, calming down strategies, and expected behaviors to rejoin the classroom activity or go back to class. On the feelings wheel, there are 6 feelings; mad, sad, excited, silly, worried and confused. On the strategy wheel, the strategies are; slow breath, stress ball, wall push-ups, sensory strip, talk to an adult and drink some water. On the reset/expectations wheel the prompts show; raise hand, respect personal space, hands to your side, listen, getting on task, and eyes on the teacher. These wheels can be used to help a student who is dysregulated in the classroom These handouts are the perfect visuals for any calm down area. One of the things you need to add as a material is a sensory strip or you can create your own using different types of textures and materials for students to touch and move their fingers one. You also need to add some type of stress ball that the students can squeeze if they choose to use the stress ball strategy. Teaching kids at a young age to self-regulate and manage their BIG emotions is crucial to helping them learn in the classroom. Students who are dysregulated cannot learn or attend to the classroom lessons. They first need to calm down and lower the level of energy and emotion. Sometimes students are not necessarily angry or sad, but they are silly and excited to the point where they are disrupting the learning of others. This tool can help those students as well to recognize tools they can use to calm down and focus in the classroom, thus allowing them to learn and others as well.

Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report and Essay
ELA, Literature, Writing, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities, Projects
Many students don’t realize that some or many of the movies that they love were first books. They are often surprised to find out that the movie came second or that there's even a book the movie is based on. In the 47-page Common Core standards-aligned resource, Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report, and Essay students in 6th-9th grade will read a book, watch the movie that is based on or adapted from the book, and then write a book review in which they take a stand on which is better and why. The comprehensive lesson plan and guide provides teachers with everything they need to give 6th through 12th grade students the tools to critically analyze the similarities and differences between the two, including helping them to support their claim with evidence and analysis. Because the project offers many handouts, a sample student essay to analyze, and a writing template, your diverse student population of English Language Learners and Resource Students can be as successful as your regular ed and GATE students. After completing this project, many students will realize that although they liked the movie, they preferred the book for a variety of reasons, including visualizing the characters and settings themselves and explaining why that made the book better. They will notice that they didn’t like how the movie adaptors changed aspects of the plots or characters, and they offer an analysis of these omissions and their impact on the storyline. They will react positively when the movie includes something they really liked or when what they visualized matches up with the adaptation. Some will prefer the movie over the book, and they will be able to articulate why. Overall, students have told me that this is one of their favorite book projects. Real-Life Integers: Working with Integers & Number Lines Grade 6 Math
Math, Number Lines, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Subtraction, Numbers, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Worksheets
Integers are everywhere in our lives! Get your students excited about learning about integers including using number lines and finding the difference between integers in a variety of real-life situations. This is perfect for students in grade six who are first learning about rational numbers. Social Media: Up Votes and Down Votes: You will read each statement one at a time to your class. Then ask for upvotes (and count the hands) and ask for downvotes (and count the hands). Remind students they can abstain from voting on a statement if they are ambivalent. If you think it will help your class, have students vote anonymously by putting their heads down. Record the upvotes and downvotes for each of the 10 statements. Students complete the math (which is really adding integers) to get each statement’s final score. (Extension: This activity can lead to a mini-lesson on facts vs. opinions.) Cities: Temperatures and Elevations: Students will need internet access for this activity. They will explore two cities: one with a positive temperature in degrees Celsius and one with a negative temperature in degrees Celsius. Using a number line, they will compare these two temperatures. Then, they must find the elevation (in meters) of six cities around the world to complete three math questions. Sports: Golf and Football: Students will apply adding and subtracting integers to a golf game to calculate the player’s score above or below par. Then, they use integers to calculate if a football team scores a touchdown. (Extension: Students can create their own football scenario. They can choose a starting point, make up 5 plays, and trade with a friend. ) Financial Literacy: Bank Account: Students add and subtract integers to keep a running bank balance in an account with an overdraft. They see how purchases reduce your balance and deposits increase your balance. I have included two versions, one with decimals and one with whole numbers only.
