Movie Theater Multiplication: Real World Project Using Arrays, Rows and Columns

Movie Theater Multiplication: Real World Project Using Arrays, Rows and Columns
Math, Order Of Operations, Grade 2, 3, 4, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Projects

Bring math concepts to life for students with Movie Theater Multiplication, a hands-on real-world project using arrays, rows, and columns. Students become builders and designers as they construct model movie theaters with seats represented by counters. This progressive activity takes learners through the concrete, representational, and abstract stages, building conceptual understanding of multiplication along the way. With 20 total tasks across 4 stages, students start by building arrays and connecting them to number sentences. Then they assign "moviegoers" to seats and write multiplication expressions to represent the seating. Finally, students find the total number of seats in mega-theaters and calculate potential ticket revenue. This differentiated project integrates math, reading, and writing for 2nd-4th graders. Use it for small groups, fast finishers, or a whole class. Includes an answer key.

Order of Operations in Action: 5 Real-life Scenarios that use BEDMAS

Order of Operations in Action: 5 Real-life Scenarios that use BEDMAS
Math, Order Of Operations, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

Order of Operations in Action: 5 Real-life Scenarios that use BEDMAS This teaching resource blends everyday real world situations with math knowledge, allowing students to solve word problems using simple mathematical equations and order of operations. It strives to show basic situations when we instinctively use order of operations to solve a multiple-step math problem: from making pancakes for a crowd to splitting the cost of pizzas with some friends. NOTE: Exponents are not used in this product. How to Use: Go through the sample problem with your class. Talk about how to turn the word problem into a simple equation. Then have your students solve the equation without order of operations and with order of operations. They should start to see why using order of operations helps get the correct answer. Then, allow students to work in pairs or small groups on the remaining four problems. For each one, students have to write their own equation and solve it with and without BEDMAS. Finally, early finishers can try to write their own sample problem to trade with a friend. What's included: A three-page PDF file containing two worksheets and an answer key: all visually-appealing and ready to print! Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed to be used in grades 5-7: when first introducing order of operations to your students, or as a real-world review of this important concept. Educational Goals: The primary objective is enriching students' comprehension and mastery surrounding the BEDMAS order of operations, minus exponents. The worksheets align well with key mathematical standards like CCSS5.OA.A.1 and CCSS5.OA.A.2. Brain Burners Word Problems Packet

Brain Burners Word Problems Packet
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Order Of Operations, Place Value, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.
