America Story of Us: Episode 4 - "Division" - Complete Video Guide

America Story of Us: Episode 4 - "Division" - Complete Video Guide
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Video overview: Commerce and industry thrive across the new nation, now one of the wealthiest on Earth. The Erie Canal brings big risk and bigger reward. In the South, cotton is king but slavery fuels a growing divide. Violence flares across the territories and abolitionists make a stand for freedom. The election of Lincoln is a harbinger of war. Slavery : The institution of slavery was a central and divisive issue leading up to the Civil War. The Southern states heavily relied on slave labor for their agricultural economy, while the Northern states had gradually abolished slavery. The disagreement over the expansion of slavery into new territories and the moral and economic implications of the institution created significant tensions between the North and the South. States' Rights : The conflict between states' rights and federal authority played a role in the lead-up to the Civil War. Southern states believed in the concept of states' rights, arguing that states had the authority to nullify federal laws or secede from the Union if they deemed it necessary to protect their interests. This clashed with the belief in a strong federal government held by many in the North. Sectionalism : Sectionalism, the division of the country along regional lines, also contributed to the causes of the Civil War. The North and the South had different economies, social structures, and cultural values, leading to increasing tensions and rivalries between the regions. Economic Differences : The North experienced rapid industrialization, urbanization, and a diversified economy, while the South relied heavily on agriculture, particularly cotton production using slave labor. Disagreements over tariffs, trade policies, and economic interests further deepened the divide between the North and the South. Political Climate : Political differences and conflicts over slavery and its expansion into new territories heightened tensions between Northern and Southern politicians. The rise of anti-slavery sentiment and the formation of new political parties, such as the Republican Party, contributed to the growing polarization between the North and the South. Failure of Compromises : Various attempts at compromise, such as the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850, aimed to address the issue of slavery but ultimately failed to resolve the deep-rooted divisions. These failures highlighted the inability to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the contentious issue of slavery. It's important to note that the causes of the Civil War are complex and interconnected, and different historians may emphasize different factors. The issues surrounding slavery and its expansion were undoubtedly central to the conflict, but they were intertwined with broader political, economic, and social tensions that had been building for decades. These teacher-generated questions are designed to help students focus in on key information during the video. These questions cover the fourth episode in the series titled "Division." The Miracle Worker (1962): Complete Movie Guide

The Miracle Worker (1962): Complete Movie Guide
ELA, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

"The Miracle Worker" is a movie based on the true story of Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan. The film was released in 1962 and is directed by Arthur Penn. The movie begins with a young Helen Keller, who has been blind and deaf since she was a baby, causing chaos in her family's home. Her parents, Captain and Kate Keller, are at their wits' end and decide to hire a teacher to help her. Enter Anne Sullivan, a young woman who is also visually impaired but has managed to overcome her own obstacles. Anne arrives at the Keller's home and begins teaching Helen how to communicate using sign language. However, Helen is initially resistant to learning and is frustrated by Anne's attempts to teach her. Anne persists, though, and eventually breaks through to Helen, teaching her how to spell words by using her hands to feel the letters. The breakthrough moment comes when Anne takes Helen to a water pump outside and spells the word "water" into her hand as the water flows over them. Suddenly, Helen makes the connection between the word and the sensation of the water. This moment is often referred to as the "miracle." The rest of the movie follows Helen's progress as she learns to communicate more and more effectively with the help of Anne. There are many ups and downs along the way, including struggles with Helen's family and her own frustrations, but in the end, Helen is able to make great strides and become a successful student. "The Miracle Worker" is a powerful movie that shows the incredible determination of both Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan in the face of enormous challenges. Their story is a testament to the power of education and the human spirit. This video guide is for the 1962 vintage classic. This 16-question movie guide will help your students stay focused during this powerful and inspirational movie. This product also includes three reflection questions that will lead into a great class discussion about the film. This movie guide comes with an answer key. Ready to print and ready to use! Enjoy!
