This resource provides your students with the opportunity to independently learn about and summarize the life of the controversial 1960's orator and African-American leader with this engaging research planner and essay assignment. This barbers reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. The Moral of the Story: Income Inequality in Familiar Tales: An Integrated ELA and Social Studies Lesson

This lesson introduces middle school students to the basic ideas of capitalism and income inequality using familiar stories as reference points. Students will take notes on a handout and consider whether they think it's fair that the 26 richest people on earth have as much money as 3.8 billion other people. They will learn about the moral of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: Dickens thinks Scrooge is too greedy and that he should share his wealth with others- especially his hard-working clerk, Bob Cratchit. Next, they discover the message in the popular fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk: one could argue the original author of this tale thinks Jack and his mom should not be living in poverty while the giant has piles of gold. Then, they choose a story or novel of their own that addresses these issues and untangle that author’s specific message. Finally, they complete a personal reflection of what they have learned and what they think about equality in society. There are no wrong answers here- some students may think changes should be made, while others may think our system is working well. This is a developmentally-appropriate way to start a discussion about social issues including income inequality, wealth hoarding, progressive taxation, basic income, human rights, and more. It is also a good way to review parts of a story: plot, characters, moral, and theme. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in the middle years (5-9) and can be used in a social studies or language arts class. This engaging place value activity helps reinforce place value skills to the billions using the populations of countries around the world. It is an interesting and relevant way for students in the intermediate or middle school grades (grade 4, grade 5, grade 6, grade 7, or grade 8), and it could easily tie in with your social studies curriculum. If students have individual devices and internet access, they can search for the populations of the countries independently. If not, you could find the populations and then read them aloud for students to record- which is actually a great way to practice place value skills too! Then students will need to work with the numbers: rounding, ordering, estimating, and calculating. This activity can work well when completed in partners, small groups, or independently- it could even be a homework task! Grades to Use With: This activity works well in the middle grades (from grades 4-8) or in a high school special education classroom. How to Use: Students need to find the populations of 10 countries: Turkey, Chile, Brazil, China, Canada, United States, Israel, Iceland, Ethiopia, and Mexico. They write each population in standard form and then round to decimal millions (for example 37.2 million). Next, they write the countries' populations in order from smallest to largest and answer some questions that compare the populations. They also write three of the populations in expanded form, and calculate the exact difference between two of the countries- all great ways to practice place value in real world tasks! Without a doubt, history is a topic that can be easily overlooked by our students. Sometimes, it can be difficult for them to make connections with the past in a way that makes sense to them. The same applies to government and politics. It can be difficult for our students to understand the rules and roles of being an American citizen. Being able to provide students with meaningful resources is the best way to get over this learning curve. Within my store, you will find a plethora of government and politics resources to utilize with your students. What You Get: This is the Congressional Leadership Worksheet for the Crash Course Government Episodes. This is a 2-page worksheet that has 15 questions for students to answer. The link to the Crash Course video can be found at the top of the worksheet. If students are completing this worksheet digitally, they will be able to quickly click on the link for themselves and be redirected to YouTube. An answer key is included in a separate Word document. If you print off the answer key, students can check their answers by themselves. The Congressional Leadership Video is 8 minutes long. How To Implement This Resource: You should print off enough copies of the worksheet for each student to have, so they can answer some of the questions as they listen to the video. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling.
