This Big and Small Sorting resource is a wonderful one to have students learn and practice sorting and matching shapes and objects.
Sorting and matching shapes and objects helps to build visual perception and thinking skills. This Big and Small Sorting activity requires children to group different objects based on whether they are big or small.
Using this Big and Small Sorting activity would be perfect for an independent workstation activity or work in pairs or small groups of students. This set may also be used to engage in conversations with students to increase their abilities to talk about something specific.
This Big and Small Sorting includes cards with images that are big and cards with images that are small. Images include common animals, foods, toys, and things of which children are familiar. Each of the sets are included in the files added to the zip file.
This Big and Small Sorting was designed for students in any grade with the need to increase visual perception and to increase their thinking skills who may also be within the autism spectrum.

- Use size vocabulary (big, small) to describe and justify a sorting decision
Teaching tips
- Laminate both the boards and the picture cards and attach velcro dots, as the instructions specify, to make this a reusable independent or small-group center.
- Have students name each object aloud before sorting, since the picture cards carry no text labels.
- Pair with other size-comparison vocabulary practice once students consistently sort these four pairs correctly.
