About this resource

What's inside this resource

This 5 Little Speckled Frogs song pack brings the traditional counting rhyme to carpet time. Page 1 gives the first verse line by line, with a simple action for each line: five fingers up, pat your knees for the log, rub your tummy for the bugs, dive a hand into the pool. A countdown table shows how many frogs start and how many are left in each of the five verses, and the last verse ends with no frogs on the log.

The rest of the pack turns the song into a counting game. Five large frog cards start on the Log mat. In each verse, one frog jumps to the Pool mat, and children count the frogs left and choose the matching 0-5 number tile. A worked example shows one less, and extension ideas include acting out the song, counting up in the pool and starting with three frogs.

  • Preschool to early elementary: counting back from 5, one less and matching quantities to numerals
  • Five pages: rhyme and actions, counting game guide, frog cards and number tiles, Log mat and Pool mat
  • Two printable versions: color and black and white

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Sing or chant a counting rhyme with matching actions.

  • Count back from 5 to 0.

  • Recognize that one jumping away leaves one less.

Teaching tips

  • Teach the actions with the first verse, then let fingers show how many frogs are on the log in each verse.

  • Print pages 3-5 at 100% so the frog cards fit the mat spaces.

  • Move a frog card on "One jumped into the pool," then pause so children can touch-count before choosing a tile.

Skills covered

  • Counting back: each verse has one fewer frog, from five down to none.

  • One less: children see a frog move and say how many are left on the log.

  • Numeral matching: after each verse, children pick the 0-5 tile that matches the frogs left.
